Hi, I'm a newbie to cast iron and the forum. Can anyone tell me what the number "1" means that can be seen inside the teardrop on the handle? thanks very large, Rick

Probably a pattern mark. If the pattern had multiple skillets on it, sometimes they would mark those skillets, 1,  2, 3, 4 etc. That way if "bad" skillets started showing up "down stream" those numbers could help ID the offending pattern.
