Have you been grinding?
« on: November 30, 2005, 08:43:08 AM »
Just a little safety tip:
I was having eye problems this week, so I went to my eye doctor.  He had a look in my eyes and said "you little red colored spots all over your contact lenses".  There was a long pause, then he said "Have you been grinding" and I replied "no" but I had been sanding some cast iron cookware.  I was wearing safety glasses and never experienced any discomfort from the sanding.  Apparently there was enough airborn particles to contaminate my contact lenses and cause a problem.  My advice for the future sanding is to remove any contact lenses and use prescription eyeglasses that are covered with a good safety goggle.

Brik,
Great safety information.  Goggles are a must especially if you are working with lye, as no glasses are going to protect you from an accidental splash.

Lucky for me I started with 2 eyes. 25 years ago I had one of them injured and after 3 operations I have recovered some vision.  This post is a great safety reminder not only for splashes.  I have read where many use wire brushes for cleaning their iron,  those little wires also break off and a little piece can also damage or ruin and eye.  Rubber gloves for lye and other chemicals and sturdy gloves for brushing, powered or by hand, should also be used.  Just some thoughts to keep everyone thinking.  You don't realize how much you use it until you lose it.

A LOT of us on this site use wire brushes on grinders and drills to restore iron. Working construction, I have seen many a wire brush "throw" wires after much use. Have seen them stick in unprotected flesh also. Don't blow off safety when in a hurry to see what's under that carbon! :'(

I'm not one to worry much about using safety equipment but I ALWAYS use goggles when wire brushing.  I've had many pieces of the wire brush hit my face and other parts of the body and stick in the skin.  Not pleasant and I don't want little wires planted in my eyeballs.  Some makes or qualities of wire brushes spit more wires than others but they all will lose some wires.   Some lose so many that you feel you are under attack.   Goggles are a definite must.

Something else to think about is to use a GOOD dust mask when sanding off rust. Or, at least, cover the back of a box fan with a furnace filter and set it nearby. (The better the filter, the more of those particles will be removed from the air.) The fan will pull the dust laden air away from you. A respirator, with appropriate filters, is even better. They're about $30 from home improvement stores.

Breathing those rust particles can't be good for you, either.

Just a thought that may be useful to someone.

Brik,

Thanks for the safety tip......I wear contacts, and would not care to damage my eyes cleaning my cast iron.  I'm blinder than a bat, so I guess I will be wearing those butt ugly safety goggles from now on.

How in the world can you be blind with big eyes like that??  ALso do they make oval contacts to fit those eyes of yours?

In my years in the ER, the biggest problem we saw with grinding was rust rings. When hot ferrous material hits the eye (like in grinding) it will stick and then in time it will start to rust. If this ferrous material is scraped off soon enough, no problem. But if left, and the rusting starts, and if the rust is in deep, it cannot be removed. It will leave a permanent, distinctive ring of rust on the eye.  I'm glad you had your contacts in!

Jeeze, Dwayne, if I ever needed encouragement to wear goggles (and I wear glasses) while grinding, your post nailed it. Thanks!
