OK......Here goes.....This is how I adjust the rods and iron pieces on my set-up.

1. Adjust rod height to position iron

2. Slip split nut, in "C" position, on to top side of rod

3. Turn both parts of split nut in opposite directions to form "closed" nut

4. Let top nut hold the weight of the iron

5. Slip split nut, in "C" position, on to bottom side of rod

6. Turn both parts of split nut in opposite directions to form "closed" nut

7. Tighten both nuts using two wrenches

Pictures of a "slip on lock nut" or as I call it a "split nut"

Hope this explains a "split nut" a little bit

Well now that is a pretty neat gizmo.  I have never seen one of those before.  I can see how it would make adjustments go quicker.  Thanks for posting that Scott.  I'll see if I can find some.

Scott, thanks for the pictures of the split nut. I have to agree with the others here that I haven't seen one of those before either. My mind is now racing at all the other things I could use these for. I can see where these could make things alot easier.

You are probably right Perry.....We used those a lot working in the electrical construction trade, especially in heavy indusrtial work, like the refineries.  They work great when one is trying to add another rack to an existing pipe rack, where you can't take the existing rack apart.  I'm sure there are many other uses, but that's what I mostly used them for.  So, I'm very used to working with uni-strut, all thread, rod couplings, beam clamps, and assorted accessories that go with the work......kind of like necessity being the mother of invention or something like that.

Kinda gets the gears turning, huh.... ;) ;)
