Cleaning Hibernation Is Over
« on: March 16, 2018, 10:44:14 AM »
With the flu and the worst of winter behind, I thought it was time to get back cleaning some cast iron. Well, I swished and swished around in my lye bath and this item was the only thing left in it. This tripod stand had more coats of paint on it than I have years on Earth collected, but finally, the lye, followed by electrolysis, managed to get it all off. The nuts and bolts holding it together were glued in place by the paint. Once the paint was gone, the bolts unscrewed easily - that was lucky.
I went ahead and seasoned it with two coats of Crisco. It sure looks better than when it had all those coats of different colored paint on it.
The one question I have about it if anyone knows, should there be a metal ring that sits on top of this stand? It just looks like the tip on the end on the legs should be holding something perhaps to better support the pot or kettle placed on the stand.

But yes, my lye bath is empty now.

I've only seen a few of these, and not one with a ring on it; the first thing that comes to mind, is that a lot of early pots and dutch ovens had a smoke ring, so the inner "lip" would prevent the utensil from sliding/tipping inboard, while the outboard one would prevent sliding outboard, but that's only a guess on my part...

I agree with Duke, Eclipse, for example made them (and several other makers). There ones that are solid, some with round holes in the legs, others still with triangle openings, and they also had a "pedestal " style as well. This is one by Eclipse (Reversible).

Found on  InspectAPedia from a 1935 Montgomery Wards catalog
Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.

Martin made some of these, too. Not sure how you'd identify it, though, unless the part number was on the casting ("30-40")

Stumbled across another stand advertisement.

National Hardware Bulletin, May, 1922.
Hold still rabbit so I can dunk you in this bucket of lye!
