Ribbed Handle on Smooth Bottom Skillets
« on: May 20, 2003, 06:08:37 PM »
I've seen a few smooth bottom skillets with the ribbed style handle like the ones on the older heat ring skillets. Would these be considered the earliest handle style on smooth bottom Griswolds?  I've never seen them shown in any of Dave's books.

PS....I've seen #6 and #8 skillets with this style handle. Did they make other size smooth bottoms with the ribbed handle?

Jerry,
I've got a No.8 Griswold skillet with the rib.   Can't recall if I have seen the 6 or any other sizes.   Yes, they would be the earliest smooth bottom block TM skillets.  Have you noticed that the TM is just slightly different in proportion to the later block skillets.  That has led me to think that Griswold may have offered both the smooth bottom skillets and the heat ring skillets at the same time.  Catalogs do not show this and it is only a possibility.

My thinking is that the slant/EPU smooth bottom skillets sizes 2, 5, and 8 predate the smooth block TM pans but the blue book disagrees.  A 3 and a 9 are also listed in the blue book as having been made in smooth bottom slant.  The No.3 I doubt was ever made and I don't recall seeing a No.9 for sure.  What they call the No.3 has a hint of a heat ring and I think that it is a heat ring but very low and different than the usual Griswold heat ring.

Is the rib on the 6 and 8 with a flat area rather than the sharp rib of the earlier block heat ring skillets?  Some block HR skillet also have the flat rib.  Handles are very interesting to me on Griswold skillets.  Something should be done up on them.  If I ever get around to getting a digital camera I hope I can provide some photos of handles.

Can you come up with some photos of the pans you are asking about or a link to an ebay auction?

Steve,
I dont have a #6 anymore, but I do have a #8 right now.....I'm going to tell off on myself....I bought a #6 one time, and couldnt see the bottom well, but I could see the handle was ribbbed....so I took it to be a skillet with heat ring and got fooled..... ;D ;D

I'll have a picture of this #8 skillet posted and also got me curious about the logo size....will measure it too.

Me neither. I'm just the "put-er". You guys have Guru by your name. I consider ya'll the "put-ees". ;D

Seriously guys, I really enjoy doing it and am glad I can help WAGS and take a little of the load off Greg.

Please hold off sending anything until next Friday as I will be out of town and away from my 'puter.

Thanks - TC

My thoughts in suggesting the rare and unusual page or album was to include pieces that are not commonly seen and may not be in any of the books.   Any make or model or photos that show us something different like variations in handles, etc.  Comparison photos would be great with two or more similiar but different items compared in one photo.  I think the album should not get cluttered up with all sorts of stuff of minor interest, though.
