Patty Bowls and Scotch Bowls
« on: July 18, 2003, 12:14:09 AM »
What are patty and scotch bowls, and what are the differences between the two?  What are they used for?

Also, would appreciate Waggers taking a look at the following URL and giving your opinion on what this is, and is it worth anything?  It has a resemblance to a lid for a dutch oven, although the edges seem a bit rough.  From the picture it looks like there is a hole on the outside bottom of the bowl (second to last pic).  Seeking expert opinions, as I like to make bread, and this would be nifty to knead the bread in.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2546331230&category=1217

I don't know what that thing is and I wonder a lot if it is really very old or even cast iron.  Looks like it could be stamped steel (very thick).  No visible gate mark that it should have if it were from the 19th century.   Have never seen anything like it but it doesn't look to me like the seller may even know what he has.   I sure wouldn't pay much for it without knowing what it is and how old.   What do all you others think?

Oh, yes, you want to know about Patty and Scotch Bowls.  There are a lot of different sizes of Griswold patty bowls which were used to deep fat fry with Patty Molds.  The scotch bowls were used for all sorts of cooking depending on what the user wanted to cook in the pot.  Like today, a lot of utensils had many varied uses.  I don't know where the term Scotch came from

Thanks so much Steve.  I tried to find information on these bowls, with no luck.  The two bowls look the same, as far as I can tell.  I also saw one on Ebay called a Yankee bowl....I like that term!!!!  I wish I knew the history behind these bowls.  The patty bowl explanation makes sense though.  Just such odd terms.....Scotch, Yankee, Patty.

Thanks for your input on the "bread bowl."  Think I will stay away from that!  I rely on the advice of those more experienced than I when it comes to odd stuff I know nothing about.  I do fine with the frying pans. ;D ;D ;D

Marty,
We are always happy to help the newer collector.  I was there once and still have to enlist the knowledge of the experts in my other field of collecting (electric fans) where I am just getting experienced.  If it weren't for the older timers helping the newer timers, it wouldn't be so fun for either.  And remember, no question is too dumb or simple to ask and you don't have to apologize for "over posting" here.  The more the better and we all learn; even I do from answering questions.

Hello Steve, Welcome back, as always, it is good to have you back. Did you spend all of your money on fans or do you have some money left to spend on cast iron? Is it possible you will get the terminator for Governor?

Thanks Thomas,
I actually came home with more money than I left with and I bought 10 nice fans.   But I sold 8 fans there which was a help.  Had a great trip except for a little incident in Western Nebraska.  I had taken a lot of leftover cookies at the end of the convention and was munching them all day while I was driving and hadn't eaten anything else.  (love sweets!).   So, suddenly, intense abdominal pains came upon me and I thought I might have food poisioning.  They subsided soon only to come back almost as soon as I was leaving a small town on old US 30.  The pain got worse and I was muttering "Ow, ow, ow" and feeling like I need to find a toilet SOON.   Next thing I found myself off the left side of the road on the shoulder about 30 feet into some tall grass and stopped with nothing amiss in the car.   I never saw myself driving off the road and have no memory between stopping and feeling my head go "dull and heavy" just before I must have driven off the road.  I think I must have been almost stopped by then anyway since I went so little off the road.   I think I passed out though a friend says my experience was like a lot of UFO incidents she has heard about.  Anyway, I seemed to be ok and invented a toilet at the side of the road right there.  Now I was feeling much better and all seemed to be ok so I backed out of the grass and went on my way.  Wow!   That could have been a bad one had there been any traffic on the road but US 30 is pretty lonely in Western Nebraska.

So, back to collecting iron, cleaning up my new fans and feeling normal again.
