Favorite place to hunt for cast iron?

My favorite place to look for cast iron witch is close to home is THE SPRINGFIELD ANTIQUE SHOW AND FLEA MARKET. Witch is in Clark County Fairgrounds, Springfield, Ohio. next to exit 59 on interstate 70. Thay have one show a month, 2 or 3 day weekend. The Extravaganza's are great.

Watch it Clark.  Secrets surface and we might ALL show up at the show.   At last years WAGS convention I did find that the central Ohio area seems to be great for hunting iron.  I used to have favorite places but I have to admit that ebay is my current favorite in that it is most productive but not as much fun as finding out in the field.

I don't have a favorite place. I try to break it up , auctions, flea markets, garage sales, antique shops. And I like to head in different directions one weekend we'll head south the next north etc... etc.. If you look at the members map theres a lot of iron hunters in Ohio. Clark don't spend all of your mad money at the extravaganza the weekend before the convention.

Ebay, since Favorite/Piqua is seldom found in California.  Lots of Wagner here, less Griswold, still less Lodge (old, raised numbers) so I have to do e-bay to get my fix, even though the shipping is killer.

Other places, roadtrips to my parents in Idaho that cut through Nevada.  Bought some beautiful pieces in Reno recently, including another Griswold 380 camp oven for about $100 to go with the one I bought for $60 a month earlier in Rexburg, Idaho.

Alameda and Alemany flea markets (I always seem to arrive after Steve has gone through though.  But the gentleman that he is, I always find something interesting left over to buy...)

And my secret fishing hole is a garage here in San Francisco where a slightly off kilter older lady runs a perpetual garage sale.  She goes to others garage sales, argues them down, then brings the cast iron back to her place and sells it to me for anywhere from a minimum of $3 to a maximum of $5 per pan.  Its like having my own cast iron valet service...

Would that older Lady happen to be Judy?  Probably someone else since Judy's pans are more than $5 per.  Where does that old lady sell?????????  Promise to leave you a piece.

You've probably seen her combing Alemany Flea for used cookware (all kinds).  If  not, go meet her at "Cookin" on Divisidero St.  If you haven't been there you will be amazed.  She has a fair amount of iron but mostly user pieces.

Salvation Army Thrift Stores and Goodwill work well for me, but there is nothing like going to an auction where everyone is after Roseville Pottery and RS Prussia, and they ignore the beautiful Griswold or Wagner pan that gets in their way of bidding on another piece of glass.
"PAN? WHAT IS THAT PAN DOING HERE?" I just love to buy them for nearly nothing and get them away from all that pretty glass ware.

  Oh yea, auctions are the place to go. Sometimes you have to wait an hour to two for what you want to come up for bid but it usually is worth the wait. I just bought an iron mountain  #12   in great shape for 10 bucks at an auction :D

The really sad thing about the last auction I went to was, I didn't have any money to speak of and let a lot of Griswold, Wagner and Waupak pans go by me really cheap.  I just sat there and suffered as they went by.  Sucks being poor.

My favorite place to look is Larry Foxes Living room. LOL. Course Johns guest house isn't bad either but you can't buy anything there.   ;D

I bet the best place to hunt for cast iron this weekend is at the WAGS convention, and I'm going to be looking to buy. ;) ;) ;) ;)

Have to agree with Clark on this one.  There was a TON or perhaps two tons of iron at the WAGS convention this weekend.  I did find a piece that I had been looking for too, a 7&8 Seldon & Griswold waffle iron with the spider web pattern grid.  Now I need the 8&9 for a full set of three.

I had a great time at the convention and it was sure good seeing everyone at the convention!!
