Griswold Lid Handles??
« on: November 02, 2004, 09:28:15 PM »
I give Griswold skillets and D/O an overall "10". But over 50% of the lids I look at have cracks in the handles. Usually a fine one at the thin point of the handle of the lid >:(. Is this about par... ???

I think there are some postings under the members only section  in the Wagner plant tour from the 2003 convention that discusses how the handles were cast as part of the lid with a sort of pivoting die. You may be seeing a mold mark from where the die seams were. Someone who was there for the tour and saw how the process worked can describe the process better and describe where the seam marks showed.

I don't see those Wagner foundry tour photos on this site nor in the 2003 Convention slide show.  Where have they gone?  The photo(s) of the dutch oven cover pattern should not be lost.  Anyone know where it has gone?

Duke,
The "crack" at the top or thin part of the handle is normal and not a crack but is where the handle in the PATTERN separates as the mold is withdrawn from the pattern.  The handle is made in two parts on the pattern and hinged at both places where it joins the cover proper which allows the handle in the pattern to open up pretty far so the mold can be withdrawn.  If someone can come up with the photos that we did have on this site you it will be quite clear to you.

I really appreciated you showing the pics of how the lid handles were produced.  You can never really picture something like that in your mind until you see it in a picture.  Those are great.  I saw a lid the other day that has the handle a lot thicker on one side than the other.  I guess so the form will slip back out of the mold easier.
