hi jerry
so what you are saying the clay could be a reason for the lower quality found in some of the small logos.
does lodge make those big old skillets that are in the sporting goods department at wallmart?

Brian, I have no idea what they used when making the small logo skillets.  I was just repeating one of the reasons I was told that some foundries had smoother cast iron than others due to using a higher clay content in their sand mixture for the molds.....and also how tight the sand was packed around the pattern.

I also dont know what Walmart carries for cast iron?

Next time you are in Walmart take a look at their iron.  I think it would have either a maker's name or country of original cast into it or on a tag or box.  If Lodge I would think it would be marked Lodge.  But, knowing a little of Walmart, I don't think Lodge would come in with a price to satisfy Walmart so I bet they buy from China.  Lot of foundries in operation over there including the one making current Wagner.

this is not a race remark. so no one should take it as one. it is a policy statement.
i dont know how the powers that be think?
how are working americans going to make it. we farm out our factories to countries all over the world. then we import almost everthing other than food these days. then they turn around and give mexicans ( and others ) visas to come over here and take what few jobs are left.mexicans are hard working people. i got no beef with any man, race, that will work !

but i sure cant figure out where americans can come out in this kind of trading. we give our jobs away. what do we get in return.???

I was just at the Super Walmart, and they had Lodge Logic in the cookware section as well as the unseasoned in the camping section.  I see Texsport brand quite a bit, which I don't care for since it is made in China and has a name that indicates it's associated with Texas some how.

Brian, there are some US foundries that make iron John Wright makes some muffin pans, etc.  Here's a link
www.johnwrightwarehouse.com
Lodge is the main us foundry for cookware.  I do buy their camp ovens well as some things not available from other sources, ex: cast iron pizza pan.  That way, if they crack or warp you haven't lost a Griswold or other such  on a camping trip.
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

roger ,,, yes i see your point i have cracked up some very nice iron just hauling it to antique shows and back.
yea i know pack it ,,lol,, but after in some cases a week at a show or sale . your tired, sometimes bummed out. just in a hurry to get home.it leaves home well packed. comes home kinda thrown in boxes,,lol,,

the worst i remember was a super nice vienna roll pan. the full marked on the inside pan. man i was sick,, cracked.

and yes i know there is debate on weather or not that pan is griswold or not. but if the one i had was not griswold. it was made by someone that knew there stuff! man it was a nicen.
