Griswold  Gem Pan?
« on: February 26, 2005, 06:44:53 AM »
;) After cleaning a #946 gem pan I noticed there is no Erie on it. All other markings are there just like in the book. Finish is not smooth. Did I get taken?  :'(

Marilyn: Is that a #8 pan,  pattern number 946? If that is the case, I see 7 variations. Two of these had the word ERIE. The rough casting does give me some concern. Can you post a pic. ?
Hold still rabbit, so I can cook you.

Marilyn: I am almost sure, you got the real thing. You asked "did I get taken?" Depends on how much you spent. Now, I cannot see the ends on the pic. If there is a 946 at one end and nothing at the other end you have variation 3, rareity 3. The rareity no. is a relative thing (1 to 10) with 10 being the rarest. You can find collectors books on Griswold items from a couple of web sites owned by members located to the left. Griswold hand ground their skillets on the inside, making them very smooth. Some items left unground have beautiful castings, some don't. When it was made has something to do with this, the older being the better, but not always. The book "Griswold muffin pans" by Jon B. Haussler has you pan at $75 to $100, however, since that book has been out, most collectors agree that the market is a little weaker. My guess is $60 to $80. Welcome to WAGS website, C B

[smiley=unsure.gif]  I'm like you on this thing.  Going to try more pictures. Appreciate you advise. Will try to get that  book.  One of a few I don't have. Also paid below value but sure wanted the pan to be the real thing. It had about 1/2" buildup on it. Because of Wags it's clean now.

Thanks again
