Upside Down 3 in the #863
« on: March 26, 2005, 08:24:52 PM »
Ok, I've had this cast iron rabbit mold in my cupboard for years and thought, hey, Easter is tomorrow.  I have the original recipe card that came with it, so I had some sort of clue as to how I would use it.  Why not use that rabbit mold.  Woah, is it nasty inside...definitely needs a cleaning.  Anyway, I wanted to find out a little about the mold and voila...I found this site.  My question is this...according to the real or fraud stuff, it's real.  I had no doubt, even before seeing the info.  My question has to do with the #3, though.  In the "863" the "3" is upside down.  How is it that would happen?

Well, in looking at it again, it looks like it might be a 2 instead.  I wetted it and it's looking more like a #2.  I am stumped as the info on the rabbit on this site states it should read 863.  Any thoughts anyone?

Sharon, the 3 on the original Rabbit is what I call a FLAT TOP 3 and the one on the reproduction is a ROUND TOP 3...The 3 on yours may be dirty or whatever and the FLAT top on the 3 looks like the bottom of a 2 in your eyes........Hope this helps

The rabbit has two parts and each has its own pattern number which are 862 and 863.

Steve, you are absolutely right!  Thank you for helping me solve my mystery.  There is an 863 on one side and an 862 on the other.  The 863 is quite faded and the 2 in 862 is also, so it was hard to see...but they are there.  Oh, yipee!  I do have an original rabbit.  By the way, I don't see much info on this forum site with regards to the cast iron rabbits.  Are they  just not collected much?

Sharon,
I just posted about the I's on the rabbit too, which is important to look at.  Rabbits are collected a lot.  We only talk about them on Easter, oh, Happy Easter.  Guess we better talk about bunnies.

Have a great day.  We've been up since sunrise and went to sunrise service and it was just perfect and beautiful outside, but only 24 here.

Sharon,
Rabbits are collected a lot.  I think we have a lot of buried posts about them on this site especially early on when we were obsessed with the reproductions on ebay.  There is only so much that one can say about a bunny and it's probably all on here somewhere.  Griswold rabbits came black iron and nickel plated with some very minor variations.  There is also an "outline" half that fits with the front of the rabbit that might have been a commercial piece to make a rabbit cake that lies down.  They are rare.
