skillet with TULIPS on handle
« on: March 26, 2005, 10:06:30 PM »
Just picked up the finest looking skillet I have ever owned. It has two tulips on the handle, a nice gate on the bottom, a single pour spout and a lip on the rim that says it once had a cover. I am hoping the tulips on the handle are enough of a clue for someone to tell me about a maker........ What's that? You want a picture? OK, but it will have to wait until tomorrow! JVN

John,
I can wait but would like to see a photo.  No idea of the maker but it sounds like one or two that I have.  The rim style is not to take a cover as best I know but that's just the way some of the early skillet lips were.  I have another style of tulip handle skillet which is earlier and, I suspect, from the same maker.  My one like I think you have is very smooth but quite heavy.  Nice pan.  Mine has no marks or numbers on it but is a size 7.  By the way, I have never seen an iron cover for any early stovetop skillets.  Owners may hvae used the old type tin covers as I often do but I don't think skillets had covers for them.

Thanks for the info on the cover. I hadn't seen a cover with only one spout either, but never put that together. Note the rim on this pan. It obviuosly was designed for a lid, but not necessarily a cast iron lid (or even one that was made by this company. Two other pictures to follow.

BTW, this is a SIZE 9. Not marked, but I measured it against our GOOD HEALTH and it is a perfect match.

A nice cleaning and I would have to hang it to show off the tulips. I will bid $25.00 without a cleaning. nice,C B

I have been incredibly busy at work and have not been on this site for quite some time. I must say, it is good to be back! I enjoy the interactions very much. As some of you know I DO sell more than I keep and I have not decided on this one yet.

No Greg,
My mouth is dry with envy.  I do have that exact pan if it measures 10-1/2" across the top rim.  What I DO like about John's pan is that it hasn't been cleaned.  DON'T clean it John; the original patina in that condition adds, I think, to its charm.  No cover was made for the skillet; that's just a decorative part of the rim.  I'd be interested in buying it if you decide to sell.  Let me know the top diameter not including the lip.
Thanks,
Steve

That is what I was thinking too.   I would not clean it.   Doesn't look crusted up,  but it has a very nice patina.   I would leave it alone.

Might have goten lost in the photos, but I stated earlier that this is an exact match in size to our #9 GOOD HEALTH. Therefore, it is 11 inches inside the rim and about 11 3/8ths including rim. The is a sltigh bowing to the bottom, however it is not large enough to make the pan wobble. I can feel it better than see it.

As for the lid info, Steve I believe I understand what you are saying but I am inclined to disagree. As anyone who reads my posts knows I am not an expert, but I find it hard to believe that such a "useful" lip is mearly "decorative". Perhaps it is the Biologist in me that refuses to believe that such an end product was not based on function. Perhaps it evolved over time, perhaps it was created "divinely" by the mold maker (let's not get into any Darwinian debates.....). Either way,  I am inclined to believe it was a very attractive but USEFUL design item that allowed the cook to fashion a lid. Just my 1.5 cents worth! BUT WE CERTAINLY AGREE THAT THIS PAN IS A REAL LOOKER!

It turns out my tulip skillet is the same size as a Griswold No.7 skillet.  Should have read John's post a little more carefully as I missed his saying that his is like a No.9.
