WW W/I Base
« on: December 07, 2005, 11:31:20 AM »
I have a co-worker/friend that has picked castironitist.  He hit the flea market this weekend and came up with a Wagner Ware square w/i with a patent date of 1910.  He only has the paddles for the iron.  I tried to find a base p/n for this iron but have had no luck.  Any idea what base these paddles should be setting on?  Does anyone have the correct w/i base for sale?

I can't explain how to tell a Wagner sq. waffle base from others; you will have to just recognize one from looking at photos or finding one where someone knows what it is.  If I'm correct there may be two slightly different bases for the sq. waffle irons but I don't remember the differences.  Maybe the 1892 patent base is different?  Wagner never used pattern numbers on any of their pieces but, after about 1923 they put the CATALOG NUMBER on their iron.  Their waffle frames do not have any numbers or markings that I know of.  Good luck, they are out there or you might find one where the irons have a broken or missing part.

I do not think the base is marked at all.   Finding a square base is going to be hard,  not impossible,  but not as common as a regular base.

The square irons with the base show up pretty often on e-bay. I also think there are two sizes of the square bases, but you can get the right one by measuring your irons and asking the seller the dimensions on their base. Look for one on e-bay with bad paddles / bad handles and you will get a good buy. Or just buy the whole set, they aren't that expensive.

I'll pass this information along.  I don't think the handles and ferrules are in real good condition on his paddles.  Maybe he can find a w/i with bad paddles, good handles and a good base.
Thanks.

I don't know the difference between Griswold and Wagner other when the name is on them so I am of no help to be able to tell, or it they are interchangeable but there is a Griswold square w/i on E-bay now.                                                                                     http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-GRISWOLD-CAST-IRON-WAFFLE-MAKER_W0QQitemZ6231975261QQcategoryZ976QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Most, if not all, the Griswold sq. bases have the notches in the front, top for the stop pins.  Wagner bases do not.  Study the photos in the red and blue books and on ebay and you will soon see some differences.  Favorite also made sq. waffle irons.  They are a little different still.
