Flop Griddle.
« on: December 28, 2008, 11:32:21 PM »
The wife grabbed this one at an auction a few weeks ago. Finally got it cleaned up. Thought ya'll would want to see it now.

Had to lighten the pic. This piece is actually black as night. I hate the way the flash changes the look of the seasoning.

Question about this type of flop griddle.
Were these reproduced? I have one that I picked up awhile back with some rough casting, the raised lettering is not all that crisp, with 2 prevelant gate marks on the bottom, same side as the lettering. There is no name such as Mrs. Petersons just a pattern applyed for date and another patern recived date.
I keep looking at it and I'm not sure if it came from an obscure foundry with poor molds or a repro. Jim

Not sure about repros on these Jim. This one is for real though. The Stuart Peterson Company was in operation in the Philadelphia area about 50 miles from here. The railroad from Philly used to run right through this area back in the day. I have a #9 skillet that I believe is from them also. The marking on the bottom reads S-P CO 9. Sounds like a reasonable assuption to me.

Thanks Chuck, maybe I'm being a little too critical in looking at mine.
My "guess" is that it may not be worth reproducing this griddle due to lack of interest. Jim

Jim, I am sure what you have is real. In your other post you meant something made by an obscure foundry with poor patterns, I THINK. However, a perfect pattern does not mean a pefect piece. But a bad mold does mean a bad piece. Patterns used many many times. Molds used once and then destroyed with breaking out the newly pour cast iron item.

Jim, I am not trying to be a know it all, and I am sure that I am not telling you anthing that you don't already know, I am just clarifying for maybe the benefit of a new/newer member.  :)
