Wagner #3 W/ heat ring?
« on: December 29, 2008, 11:42:37 PM »
I picked up a couple of Wagner #3's at an auction the other day. After a closer look, the one, a 3B looks to have a raised area around the outer edge similar to a favorite #3 w/ H R that I have. I will have to wait til it's out of the tank to get some pics for ya'll. I know there is some controversy about if Wagner ever making a #3 with a heat ring. Maybe this is one. Or have these been seen before?

Chuck, the talk is, there ain't a number 3 with a heat ring, so you might really have something here. ;) I think I got that right.  :-/

It's not a real distinct H R like you see on a Gris, but it is definitley a raised area around the circumference of the pan.

Finally got this one done. Let me know what you think. Is it a heast ring or not. It has been worn down quite a bit but it is there. Looks alot like a favorite that I found on ebay, just that the heat ring is not worn as bad as mine.  http://cgi.ebay.com/Favorite-Piqua-Ware-Fry-Pan-Skillet-Kitchen-Ware-3A_W0QQitemZ150316423500QQihZ005QQcategoryZ976QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem The 3 I have, has a slightly upturned handle. It doesn't stick straight out. It angles up about 1/2" from the edge of the pan. IMHO this is a heat ring but I'll welcome debate on it.

Chuck,
Could you post a picture of the side profile. Most Wagners had that outset heat ring, and straight sloping sides.
I dunno if that's a good a good description of what I mean, but I hope you know what I meant... :-/

Ya like that little dohicky I have to hold the pan on it's side? It's called a Wife. Comes in pretty handy sometimes.  ;D ;D

Outer heat ring = a raised area around the circumfrence of the bottom of the pan. Maybe not websters definition, but pretty close.  ;D

The Favorite #3 on ebay has a heat ring, just not as worn as this one.

Chuck, I have one of those dohickies too but mine doesn't hold iron very well.  I will agree they do come in handy at times. :) :) Just glad my dohicky doesn't read the forum.   ;)Mike

Nah Chuck, this piece does not have a heat ring. A blind man should be able to tell if a piece has a heat ring or not. Some pieces do have a sort of raised wide area around the outside edge, but that is not to be confused with a heat ring, which is a definite raised strip or wall even. But this piece definitely does not have a heat ring.  :)

*making a note that Chuck and Mike refer to their beloved as a "dohicky"* (filed under "useful information - bribery) ;D

My vote is not a heat ring, but perhaps a pattern was altered that DID have a heat ring...I can see what you mean...the outside edge of the pan is raised slightly, but not sharply enough to be a HR.

Hello Jeff, I am currently putting a set of them Smileys together. Have you got a picture of a 2? I don't recall seeing a 2. And have you got any extras laying around in your way? If so I'll let you know what I need. I got a 3 and a 1 at an auction on Tuesday.

I think Favorite was all over the place on them Smileys. By that, I mean wherever they could get a pattern, because they did use patterns from Wagner and Griswold. For instance, I got a 12 Smiley, its got an outside heat ring, and that is an old pattern, its got a Wagner Ghost on it and I believe "ERIE" also. And then I have a 13 Smiley and its got an inside heat ring and an all together different pattern, later, much refined, with an assist handle one piece and not open like Wagner.
