One for the foundry list???
« on: January 02, 2009, 01:07:12 AM »
Picked this one up today. It looks like a mini double boiler. It was sold as a glue pot. I think it was used to melt lead because the inner pot has about an inch of very soft silver metal that was painted over in the bottom of it. At what temp does lead melt. I figure I can melt most of it out, just not sure how to get the last thin layer that I know will be left behind though. OK back to the markings. The top outer edge of the outer pot is marked MERIETTA PA on one side and 0:00 on the other. Not sure what that means but it's there. The outside bottom of the inner pot is marked 0:00 also. Both pieces have bottom gate marks. That's about all the marking I can see right now. I'll have to dunk it to see what else I find.

Chuck, it is a glue pot.  It was used like a double boiler for hyde glue.  The inner pot held the glue.  Someone may have used it for other things though.  There's no telling.

Hyde Glue?

Animal skin glue.  Here's a link.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_glue

You can melt lead on a stove or charcoal grill.
