"Your lucky find"
« on: February 09, 2009, 02:29:50 AM »
I want to hear about "Your lucky find". What did you buy this weekend, or last week, that you might consider to be a good deal or a lucky find. Lets hear the whole story, what you found, where you found it, what did you give for it and what you might feel is different or special about it. I'll get the ball rolling because I think I got a good deal on a few skillets that I dont even need! First of all I gotta tell you I really enjoy haggeling and spontaniously coming up with resons for sellers to sell me things for less than they want to. A garage sale junkie you might say. My promise to myself is never give anybody what they want for anything, especialy in a purchasing combat type scenario like a used car lot, dealership or a flea market. I even try to get senior citizen discounts at sporting goods stores, I'm 40 fat and gray, and half the time I get the discount.

First item is a Griwold #8 smooth botom skillet. Just a plain, dirty, oily old #8 that needs striped and reseasoned but passes all the tests. I ask How much. He says $12 I offer $5. He says I paid $8 & gotta have 9 to make a buck. I said another guy 50' away has the same one for 6 and I put his back and start walking. The guy says OK $6. Deal
Second is 3 #3s. A griswold small logo erie. A made in USA (probably Wagner), and a crusty old mystery pan, with a heat ring, that will make a good identification topic another time. The guy says the Gris. is $9 and the other two are $5 each. I said well I cant tell if the crusty one is even american iron so I'll pass on it because its only worth a buck to take a chance on a pan that could be chineese. The USA pan is worth $2 because it could be some kind of pot metal with no brand name and all. And the Griswold to me is only worth $4 because I just bought this #8 for $6. Then he says $9 for the two. I wait a minute, act like Im thinking, and offer $9 for all three. He says 10 I say 8. Got all three for $9. Both deals were at the same flea market.
Thats my lucky find for the week.

Lets hear about "your lucky find".

Nice story ray. Well I have had a few but some lucky ones for sure.

Once I at a yard sale and found a stack of griswold ashtrays for 50 cents a piece and then the next year the same folks had another yard sale and on my way out I spotted some pans (one with a very noticable handle) and asked how much.. 1.00 each. Well one was a #9 indian head wapak, and a few #7 slant logo griswolds.

Griswold rabbit mold I won on ebay though. Guy had it listed as a cement mold and spelled wrong. Got it for $30 plus shipping I believe.

Bought A mint flat bottom number six kettle with lid for $15 and the dealer that saw it before me was trying to haggle with the sellers wife on the $15..lol. Well I didnt make a friend that day when I stepped in with 15 in hand. Couldnt open my wallet fast enough.

I have done really good with unmarked pieces and eries too. Alot of sellers have very limited knowledge on what they are selling.

Buy the red and blue book and study them. deals will come and go but that is what makes this hobby so much fun. I buy very little on ebay I like the thrill of the hunt I guess.

My absolute best find was the #17 Griswold oval fish skillet.  Not listed in any book and is likely one of a kind and a prototype.  This skillet was listed on an internet site and discussed as a #15 oval skillet.

Griswold oval fish skillets are in sizes 13, 15, 16 1/2 and 17.  Only those 4 sizes.

Well just made another good find yesterday, #2 facsimile Griswold waffle iron.  My second one of these, darn hard to find.  I may have to sell this one, will have to see what it looks like when it arrives.

It is the salesman sample, circa 1880's, waffle iron.  Not a toy, but is usually called a toy.Only a hand full on them are known to exist in the collector's world.  Page 135 of the Blue Book, but the price in the book is way off.  Last one on Ebay sold for $6000, if I remember correctly, but it had a broken hinge, so I don't know if the sale went through or not.

Wow Greg. I see the BB value on the Facsmile Waffle Iron is 500 to 700 dollars. So for one to bring 6000.00 is a bunch, obviously a rare find.  :o So if you have found a second one, good for you.  ;)

And Jeff, 5.00 for a number 7 oval Griswold Roaster. I know I'd sure be happy with that.  ;)

Perry, I believe the Ebay price was way over the top.  I believe one in perfect shape is more likely $2000-3000.  I've seen more #0 w/i's than this one.  With the broken hinge, I believe we are in the $1000 range.

Best find?  Probably my wood handled aluminum #2 Griswold skillet.   I bought it and 3 other pieces of aluminum Griswold for $5.00 ;)   Second closes to that is my milled bottom #8 Griswold skillet.   Tried to get the seller down on price,  but she was firm at $20.00 :'(

I think it was my ERIE deep 10 on the way home from the convention in Iowa.  I thought $50 was such a fair price I forgot to ask if there was a discount-at on of them just off the interstate overpriced Antique Malls. :)  Mike

In all fairness, Mike, don't you have two best buys?  Your #10 deep Erie and your Lodge California Acorn pan?  Didn't you steal that one, too? ;)

Picked up a complete Happy Hooligan wafer iron for $20 on eBay 3 or 4 years ago.  That price included the shipping.
