Auction Find?
« on: February 17, 2009, 09:49:15 PM »
Found this one yesterday afternoon at an auction. Wish I could have gotten the Griz 13 that was there. Or at least one of the 3 #0's. Or the Rau Brother Griswold #2, but those were out of my price range. This one kinda fell into my lap. The auction helper went to hold it up for the auctioneer, and the auctioneer says, That's nothin'. Put something with it. I guess he never looked at it real close. Let's just say I got a good deal on it.  :)  One of my questions is, Can I electro this piece with out damaging the lining? And can I season it in the usual way? Not the inside of course. Anyy suggestions?

Nice piece of Quaker Ware Chuck. I have never run  piece of it thru the electro. I suppose you could to clean the iron portion , but I do not believe it would remove stain from the porcelain. This piece looks to be in good shape, I would wire brush the outside or steel wool.
For the stain inside, I have filled pieces with bleach to remove the stain. Some have had to set for a week to look good and white.
I do not see why you could not season the iron the way you've been doing it. Just would not super heat the piece.

If ya go electro let us know how it goes. You could suspend the pot with a C- clamp to get a connection. Just protect the porcelain with something where the clamp goes against it. Again, I have never done this, so it's really your call.

Chuck, what Ed says makes sense to me about the electro. Also, do you all see where this piece DOES NOT SAY ERIE, PA? Remember some time back we were naming off pieces that did not have Erie, Pa on them, because we said that for a piece to be Griswold, it had to say Erie, Pa on it, EXCEPT, for a few pieces and we named some of them off. I wonder if this piece here was on the list?  :-/

And yep, Chuck, thats the way to get to the top of the posts.  ;) ;D

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm gonna go with the wire brush + bleach for now. If the lining were to fall apart, so would I.  :'(  . What would you concider super heating Ed? I do get up to 600 degrees on one of my seasoning steps. This might be to much, I'm not sure. I go that high in the last step to get the piece nice and black.

Perry, I did notice that it did not say Erie on it. I was hoping it was still worth the money. Now that you mention that this may be one that was made in Erie, but not marked Erie, makes me feel a little better. I'm hoping someone can verify this. I did find it in the BB, and it looks like it may be part of a 3 piece set? Or maybe it's just shown with two other pieces, Again, I'm not sure. Thanks again guys, and if anyone else has some input, feel free to let me know.

Chuck, in my post, I did not mean to imply that this piece was made anywhere other than Erie.

Porcelain should not come off in the electro seeing as it's adhered to the iron. I was thinking more of maybe discoloring it. From what I can tell from the pic looks like there is no crazing in the porcelain either.
Chuck why not try the 500-600 degrees for 45-60 minutes first and see how it looks. Thats how it was explained to me, to make the iron dark when I first started collecting. You may save yourself a step. I think you will be OK at that temp.
