Had a little fun at the auction today. Picked up a "few" pieces.

Hey Perry, How do you clean the slicer without wrecking the paint?

Just need to put a better edge on the blade. I'd like to try it out.

That looks like a nice one Chuck. I just washed mine real good. It looks about like yours here, condition wise, and then I wiped it all down real good with my all time favorite, mineral oil, and left it all original. Thats how I did it, ain't sayin thats the best way, but, like you, I did not want ruin the original pin striping and paint.

Here's one from last weekend. Found it at a flee market, full of old hardware. We had to ask the seller to dump it out so we could get a look at the bottom. I'm glad we did. This one is in the RB, page 152. The only difference is the lack of a p/n on the bottom. Could this be an older version?

I was suprised on the condition. The outside is beautiful. The only issue is some pitting inside. It may have sat for some time with water in it.

Chuck, if you decide to sharpen that blade, make sure you only sharpen one side of it, thats the outside, if you sharpen the inside, it will cut away from the product being sliced, there is a real close tolerance there, and you'll be messin that tolerance up if you sharpen the inside of the blade. I think I got that right on them. Just to be sure, check the inside, and see if its ever been sharpened on that side, I'd say no.  :)

I agree Perry. For all the same reasons. That would move the sharp edge further from the product, causing a poor slicing action.
We do have certain shops around here that may take on the task. I would have to be very specific on how I would want the sharpening done, and explain to them that this piece can not be replace very easily.
Do you know if Enterprise was in the habit of shimming the back of the blade to get it into tolerance? If so, I would have to take care when removing the blade, so that the shims would be replaced in there proper position. Just a thought.

Mine is indeed an enterprise slicer. The patent date on mine is Aug 6 1901.

That just boggles the mind, Chuck. I honestly don't think I've seen that much cast iron since I started looking around, last March or whenever. Total, that is.

They must have just SPEWED iron out of those plants in PA, and everyone bought every piece they might ever think they wanted....then, when they traveled west, they threw them all over board.  ;D

...somewhere in Ohio or Illinois.  ;D ;D

Hey Becky,
These pieces are from an estate sale. The family was suprised when they went to the fathers house, and the only rooms they could walk in were half the livingroom, part of the kitchen, some of the bedroom, and the bathroom. The other 2 bedrooms, including any closets, the attic, the basement, and 2 sizable garages, were packed full of stuff.  :o :o Not all cast iron mind you, but there was a sizable collection. They've had 4 auctions so far, and I believe they are having another 2 or 3 more. They don't know if there is any more cast iron, which shocked me. I figured they would know what they had. That was until the auctioneer walked me through the house. There is still stuff just stacked up in different rooms. That's when I realized why they didn't know. They said they may find more. From what I saw, they are bound to find just about anything in there.

Will,
It's to far to drive, and gas is still to expensive. I'll borrow the neighbors horse. It may take some time, but I should get there eventually. ;) ;D
