Erie 9 - first "real" buy
« on: February 01, 2014, 08:51:29 PM »
I have been fortunate to get all of my cast iron pieces so far from junk stores, thrift stores, craigslist or just given to me, so this was my first real purchase at a local antique mall.
The booth is filled, but I usually consider the prices qiite high, definitely no bargain.  I purchased this Erie 9 today at a good price (I think).  What would be a reasonable price for this?  I'm excited to try out my first Erie!

Also, is this a third series?  Still trying to figure out the details!

I would initially say it is a Third Series ERIE.
However, a closer look at the ERIE may be warranted.
Are there "quotes", and that typeface may, or may not, be considered block.
If it is Artistic, then it would be a Fourth Series.

The current range on Ebay has seemed to be $60 to $90 on completed listings.

Here's a better picture.  That first one was still at the antique place.  There are quotes and I think it is considered block, but the r has a little curl to it.  There is also a 713 near the middle.
Thank you for the information.  I think it was good that I trusted my instincts that this was underpriced.

I'd say 4th Series.
The lettering would not be considered block, and the 4th Series are found in both Outer HR, and inset HR.

Below is a close up of my confirmed 4th Series lettering, with the inner HR...

Yes, that's the article I looked at to try to determine which series I have.  Looks like I'll need to take another look at it!

I thought the other type of lettering was a lot different looking.  More things to look up today!
Thank you for your help.

Thank you Larry.  I was hoping to get more discussion about what series.  Should I retitle this post?  I thought it was third, also.  I re-read the article and still think the stylistic Erie looks completely different.  All my letters are straight lines, except for that little curl on the r.
I took pictures with my real camera still if that could be helpful.  This was just a quick picture with my tablet (not great quality)

I'm in upstate NY and that first picture is a booth that is filled with cast iron that I like to drool over look at all the different makers of cast iron. I figure if nothing else, it's a good place to learn about the different foundries and get better at learning to ID.
The other eries were in the 60 to 70 range, but this one was only marked 35.  Not sure why since it was the nicest condition of them.  I was also told it's some 90+ yr old man that brings it back up with him when he returns from Florida and still uses oven cleaner and a plastic bag to clean all of it!  Crazy!
If there's anything anyone is looking for, I can check on it, but I can't guarantee the pricing.  Then again, maybe it won't be too bad if it's the right piece.

Colleen,
You ERIE skillet is a Third Series ERIE. It has an outside heat ring and a pattern number. As pointed out in the article on ERIE skillets many types and size of lettering was used on the Second and Third Series skillets.
