New Lodge Question
« on: January 31, 2014, 09:58:25 AM »
Hey all,
My new 15" Lodge skillet just arrived from KaTom. Wow that is some serious iron. I was all set to fry up a bunch of bacon when it occurred to me I should check the bottom for flatness first.
Well, it's not flat. There is a pretty good high spot in the inside center, and checking the bottom it looks to be about an 1/8 inch gap under the straightedge in the middle. I'm kind of disappointed it's not flat. I know any oil will flow to the edges and leave the center dry unless I add more oil than I really need to, for like searing steaks or other meat.  Should I return it?...or is this normal on a skillet this size.
What would you do?  :-? :-/

Not uncommon for larger skillets to have a crown. Not sure on KaToms return policy, but I might be tempted to heat it up and see if it doesn't flatten out. I've seen that happen before. If it doesn't you might even email Lodge,

Views with no responses can mean a number of things... :

1.  I don't know, but I'd like to know, and I keep checking back... waiting, waiting...

2.  I think I might have an idea, but I'll wait for someone with more experience to come along

3.  I'm busy, and need to go grab the burning food off the stove..... ::)

4.  I will wait for the guys that use those BIG skillets to stop by

5.  I'll wait for the LODGE experts to stop on by.........

So,  don't read too much into that view thing....

I like Dwaynes answer... the first thing I thought was to try heating it to a medium heat to see if it flattens out.
If it does not, contact Lodge.  I hear tell that they are responsive to consumers.  :)

Mark,
This board is also available to view by everyone, the whole world, so... there may be many views by folks who cannot reply because they are not registered.  :)

Just tryin' to reassure ya!

P.S.  I took the liberty of giving you the appropriate smiley that you referenced above... :D

ADD:  No need to feel that way though... let us know what happens when it heats up a bit!

Well heating it didn't seem to do much..stayed crowned while hot and after it cooled. Tried calling KaTom but they don't answer on weekends, soooo..still would like to hear from others who might own one of these skillets, thanks.

Mark, I,ve never bought from Ktom but I would think they would exchange it. If not contact Lodge with the date of purchase and I would bet they will take care of it. Hope you get help, I've cooked in lots of large Lodge skillets and haven't seen a crown yet. Let me know if you don't get help, I'll try for you.

Hey thanks Steve..that's just what I needed to know, that this isn't normal. I just didn't want to return it and get another just like it. I'm pretty sure KaTom will let me exchange it, but I don't know who pays return shipping yet. For a refund, I think I pay, but for an exchange due to defect, it is unclear on their sites return policy. I hope it's not me, this thing weighs a ton and I've already paid shipping once. Thanks for your kind offer...I'll post here what happens when I call K-Tom on Monday.

I purchased my new lodge and noticed the same rise in the middle, I emailed Lodge the same question that you asked and they told me that it would flatten out after awile of regular use.

I have a new 12" that came from Kroger, and a newish #8 that I bought from a flea market that are both like that. I guess it is normal.

Interesting Jerry. Did they happen to mention what they'd do if it didn't flatten out? Did yours? I only have 30 days to return mine.

They told me if the pan didn't flatten out to let them know, and they would replace it. I had to show proof of the purchase and they would give me shipping instructions to return it.

Update:
Well, it took a little while, but my new replacement 15" Skillet arrived today from KaTom and a pleasant surprise, Quote:
"We are not requesting the defective unit be returned, so you may discard it at your discretion. Please let me know if you need anything else!"

Just thought I'd share this...very pleased with KaTom customer service!
The new one is flat as can be...anyone need a good boat anchor?    J/kidding.. I'll use the crowned one around the campfire.   ;)

glad all turned out well for you. If you ever get tired of it, donate it to a Boy Scout troop. Those kids wouldn't even notice it.
