McClary MFG GEM No.1 Single Burner Stove

I picked up a few pieces while I was out today including this little 1 burner oil or kerosene stove, It is very small and marked on one side McClary MFG and on the other side GEM No.1, I will post some photos soon, Any additional info on McClary is appreciated.

here is the back view, Any guess on the age of this little guy, There is a large wick on the inside apx 4" wide x 1/4" thick

Pretty sure what you have there is a sad iron heater. Sure I've seen it somewhere in some of the documentation I have, i'll take a look when I have some time.

Nice piece, I like it. As for age, 1880's/1890's?

Robert after you guiding me in the right direction it appears this is a sad iron heater sometimes used as a camp stove or a railroad caboose stove or for heating carriages.

Sorry Valerie, I can't seem to find it, if I do come across it, i'll post for you. There seem to be a lot of sad iron heaters from around the same time frame that match the look of the McClary. Here's one on ebay, patent date 1893.

Thanks Robert...Now I have to start cleaning it, Overall condition including the wicks looks pretty good, the Mica lens has some damage but is still usable, Is there anyone still manufacturing Mica for lenses like this

Yes I certainly will post some pics when it is done and yes I want to get it operational, From what I understand todays Kerosene is different than the Kero when this was made and will make too much smoke so I think lamp oil is recommended now. I have to do some more research on that.

I have started to disassemble it and when I took the top of the tank off all of the gasket cement was cracked, I may investigate a more pliable material for the cement like silicone or similar.

Be careful taking that apart, wear gloves and respirator and do it outside. Much of that cement was asbestos based!

So how is the clean up going Valerie?

The only thing I could find comparable is a lamp stove from 1903. Catalog pic and a similar setup. Still think yours is older.

And just came across this from 1896... Pictured is the Gem No 2. I would imagine your No 1 configuration would be very close, feet seem to be the same, base is similar.

Robert,
Thank you for all your help, I am still working on it, I had disassembled it and it cleaned up very well in the lye tank, I seasoned with a coat of Canola oil but to be honest I do not like the look and in your ads it indicated that they were japanned as this was and I am investigating what I am going to use to do the black japanning, until then at least the seasoning will keep any rust from forming although I will have to strip it before japanning/painting.
I notice both ads you posted list it as a Lamp stove with illumination being produced thru the Mica window and no mention of being a sad iron heater although I would imagine that would be included as part of the stove use.

It seems similar configurations were sold as multifunction. Some ads show sad iron heaters, others' camp stoves, lamp stoves etc. Guess they tried to sell them any way possible.

Seen a McClary 212 gas stove at a local mall, but they want $225 for it. Would clean up very nicely.
