Weekend finds Griddle & Kettle

Picked up a few pieces this weekend, A nice long griddle with no markings other than 8M on the bottom and a nice big kettle , Here are some pics, I believe the griddle is Wagner but not positive because I saw a WAPAK that looked very similar, The kettle is unmarked and although it was being used as a planter it does not look too bad overall as far as rust and pitting.The bail ears are pretty unique on the kettle so maybe that will help identify it.

The griddle here was made to accept a bail. I have seen them with and without the bail. Thats a nice looking piece. I like the kettle too but I sure don't know who made it.  :-/

Frank,The griddle was sitting upside down outside on an old chair at a local farm stand, They had some old farm equipment/implements out front for decorations, It was covered in rust and when I wiped it away I saw the 8M but no other marks, I initially thought BS&R, Anyway I asked them if it was for sale and the rest is history.

What are the dimensions of the kettle,

Hi Perry, What makes you think it was originally made to accept a bail, The divider in the handle, Not arguing it wasn't just curious, I have searched online and looked at a lot of different griddles and while the Lodge,Wagner,Favorite and Wapak all have a similar style there are subtle differences, For one thing this griddle has a flared lip at the bottom and the other ones I have looked at have straight or just slightly tapered sides.

If the overall dimensions are 9 3/4" X 20 1/2", that matches a #8 Lodge as listed in one of the old catalogs members have access to. I believe this griddle to be a Lodge. The handles also match the catalog photos.

Russell, Thank you for the info, Measured across the bottom and not including the handles the unit measures 9 3/4" x 20 1/4"  - 20 3/8", Is there any reference to the number 8W in the catalog and does the old Lodge in the catalog have the rolled edge at the bottom. I am assuming this would fall into the period after Lodge stopped actually putting the name on the piece and went to paper labels but no later than the 1950's-60's

Valerie, I don't know that Lodge ever put their name on early griddles. On yours, the 8 is the size. The raised letter is a molder mark. As far as the bottom goes, catalogs are notorious for not showing much! It is a very nice example. I would have picked that one up.
I think what Perry says about putting a bail on it is true. The handles look like they were made for that option, and they did not have ove-gloves back then.

Thats correct Russell. I know it will accept a bail because I have seen them with bails. In fact you could order them with or without.

That bail attachment on the kettle was by Lodge, doesn't mean that the kettle is Lodge as others used that style as well. I think Griswold may have used that style as well.
