I almost feel this page should be required reading for all new members, so they don't inadvertently buy a fire damaged piece thinking it is just rusted.  The fact that someone has the nerve to even offer these items for sale is infuriating to me.  I like to think it is our job to educate people so that our pieces are passed on intact for future generations to use and enjoy. 

I watched a Cowboy Kent Rollins video on cast iron restoration.  He refuses to clean cast iron in a fire but does put it in the firebox of his woodstove so it is near but not in the fire.  He also cautions he would never use this method or the self-cleaning oven method with vintage cast iron.

Oh, it is rampant out in Spacebookland.....  A handful of CI Groups ban the discussion or promoting of FIRE cleaning... and will boot the offender.

Many just let it go on, and on........

I go "B***s to the wall when I see it being promoted, and usually get blocked... LOL... by the offenders.......

Which then gives me a clear field to warn anyone not to buy ANY CI from them!!

Something I just don't understand: if people know what overheating a pan on a burner can cause warping, how do they think placing cast iron in a raging fire will have a positive result?

Because the people that know "overheating a pan on a burner can cause warping" just may not know "cast iron in a raging fire" can do the same, or vice versa.  Having spoke to some of them, the excuses are myriad, but do not usually include the obvious problem:  they didn't think about it, or question what they had been told (saw it on FB or YT, the current font of ignorance).
