Was just thinking about this...you need lye for making soap. Why wouldn't stores that sell soap making ingredients have their own brand of lye? Do they have to buy drain cleaner too?

Last shipment I ordered (last spring), I ordered tech grade, they sent Food grade. I called about the change up, and never received the promised return call....  [smiley=question-marks.gif]

I can't find anywhere to order it on the website. I had 32lbs in my cart from a month ago and it disappeared when i tried to view it.

Guess ill have to go back to Rooto again.

Looks like their website is messed up.
You could call them.
Essential Depot should have it... check sticky above... where to buy lye...

Trevor, the food grade will work.  That is what I have currently, and it's a whole lot cheaper than Rooto or Roebic.

Mark, I mix 2 lb. to 5 gallon, so it gets used up when mixing 2 or three lye baths. :)

I buy it by the eighty pound bag. It's so cheap that way,  that I keep twenty pounds and throw the rest away.  ::)

I am buying some for a friend and I (most is for me). I need to change 2 baths (want to go double strength this time). I also want to try it in my small electro (5 gallon bucket) and I like to keep some on hand :D

Im done with the food grade... It has been a nightmare since i switched. I can get the Rooto for about $3.25 per pound. Thats what i used to use and never had a problem. So at this point I don't mind paying the extra cost.

Yes, you can use it as an electrolyte.

Old Forum>Cleaning & Restoration Board> Sticky "Best Threads"> Using electrolysis to clean cast iron> Lye as Electrolyte

There are also some other threads that discussion regarding electrolyte information pops up.

I have/ and am in the process of recovering/reconstructing all of those missing threads.  22 threads took me 2 days, and I am not done.........

Will probably take another 5 days to recover and restore the Best Threads sticky here. (40 more to go, on JUST that sticky).... :(

Possibly.  I'll add you to my list of possible volunteers for the small army of worker bees! ;D  .  I think I have the process standardized enough that  I can do an instruction sheet.  (software compatibility dependent! ) 8-)
