The vinegar bath that is discussed often - Is that only for hard-core rust or even that little sheen of rustiness that I'm seeing after cleaning the pot with water?

50/50 vinegar is good for light rust as it seems you need. Electrolysis is best for heavy rust, if the piece is even worth salvaging. Pitting is the problem with very rusty pieces. Value and usefulness decrease rapidly with a piece depending on how severe pitting is.

Ok, so it's not perfect, but it'll have to do.  Certainly looks better than it did!

As someone who unfortunately has too much experience with the oven cleaner method, I'd like to say nice job! A hammered DO was an ambitious undertaking for that method, with the DO being so heavy and detailed. De-rusting a piece that size with vinegar has its challenges too.

Surely bidders will prefer the "after" version over the "before" when you list it. The transformation while cleaning is always amazing to see. If your cast iron spirit isn't as scarred as your countertop (I'm really sorry that happened) maybe you could find a small-ish skillet cheap at another yard sale for your next project. Small skillets are really easy to clean, and often they come out so nice you want to keep them and cook in them. :)

Melanie, you did an excellent job.  Even more impressive was that it is your first attempt.  Now, on to the hard stuff ...
