Somebody Painted a red and white #3 enameled Griswold.
« on: October 02, 2014, 01:10:03 AM »
Somebody painted an apple on a #3 enameled Griswold. I was able to 'rescue' this item from GW. How do I get it the rotten apple off without damaging the enamel?

Thanks
Jim

If the skillet was a highly sought after collected piece and it was in real good condition I would be wondering how to get the apple off of there too. But it is not. And it has some inside damage to boot. So I think it looks pretty good on there myself. And so I would leave it on there. If I had it thats what I would do.  :)

I thought about keeping it on there when I got the pan. I called it rotten because the paint has started to flake of the pan, unfortunately. Amy (the prettier half) actually wanted to hang it on a wall until we noticed that the paint was starting to come off.

Lye bath should take it off.

I have cleaned old paint off of porcelain enamel signs using paint stripper and a razor blade with no problems at all.

The main active ingredient in paint stripper is Lye.

So definitely hit the Lye bath.

It all depends on the type paint.

Shane, that might stain the enamel.
