Hated to see this - now what do I do??
« on: January 31, 2015, 08:48:27 AM »
I was so proud fining this Wagner 8 Skillet at an antique mall in rough shape but sitting flat
I knew I could clean it up and bring it back to glory

Then, I see this...........small hole all the way thru - rust was covering it up before

Make it my dedicated Grilled Cheese Skillet..............

Any better ideas how to fix

Know a good welder? It could be filled and ground and polished smooth...if the iron around the hole is sound.  About the only way to save it I can think of.

Hi Thomas.
That is a real bugger discovering flaws like that; but it could be worse, right?
How heavy (thick) is the base?
If you were competent with tools, I  was going to suggest a blind rivet, file then season.
That could be risky because of the stresses and the pan may not handle that :-/
You could clean the hole with a drill to suit the c/s screw you will be using, ever slightly countersink the pan from the inside, reduce a countersink screw to suit (with a clean shank and now no drive slot), then heat the pan well in the oven and follow on by brazing or silver-flo in the fastening. Dress up with a Dremel or such when completed. After a few seasons you may never notice it. Just like that paint(?) job we might do with that flaw that really bugs us; after a few weeks of use we cannot remember what all the fuss was about ;)
PS you could thread it and insert a m/c screw, braze in then cut the excess and finish with a rotory pad, Dremel or such?

Thomas, can you provide a picture that shows the entire bottom of the pan?

I know you want to save it... but...

If it is a stylized WW smooth bottom #8 with catalog number piece...

it may just be better to look for another, without the hole...

I was thinking along the same lines as James.  Drill and tap the hole (just enough to tightly let the screw go in, maybe a #8 or 10), screw in a small brass screw, cut it off and peen it over, then scrape even with the iron surface.

By the way - a buddy of mine at work tapped the hole out and threaded in a piece then cut off smooth on both sides

Works awesome - so impressed

Hope to put some pics up soon

Thanks for the tips :D
