Aluminum griddle
« on: March 01, 2015, 07:00:53 PM »
Found an aluminum long griddle yesterday, $3.00 at a local thrift store and I have no clue where to start with it. Safe to assume no lye? It's not overly dirty, has a smooth surface.

Can one season aluminum and use it? Is aluminum even safe to use or just hang it on the wall and talk about it? This one is from the 1950's I believe, made at a local foundry.

Lye will dissolve aluminum... literally.

Not certain what the white stuff is on the bottom.

I'd wash it well with hot soapy water (I like Dawn Power Dissolver).

I run Cast Aluminum pieces thru the Self Cleaning oven cycle.

This piece does not look too bad, 2 hours should do it.

That said, I have a newer stove, so my Self Clean Oven temp is a bit lower than some very old models.... cleans at about 900°

Well now, won't be going near the lye bath with it anytime soon.

I'll give it a go over the weekend. The white on the bottom is a reflection of light, the piece was ground smooth in that area.

Thx for the info.
