Griswold Cast Iron Sundial

Finally getting around to cleaning up a #357 sundial and was wondering what others have used for a protective finish. This one's a plain cast iron version and appears to have been japanned if I were to guess.  Not sure if it will ever see the great outdoors, but it might... Anybody care to share what's worked for them?

I just used mineral oil on the one I had.

Is the gnomon intact on yours?
