Turk Head Gem Pan #20 953
« on: May 22, 2018, 12:27:26 PM »
Hi there,

I found this pan at an estate sale and I'm trying to figure out what variation it is (I think either 1, 4 or 8) and the value. It has markings on all four locations: Griswold, Erie PA USA, No. 20, 953.

Thanks,

Jessica

Jessica,

You had a pretty good day at the estate sale.  That gem pan is a nice find.  I believe that is Haussler Variation 8.  Variations 1 through 4 have round corners and yours has the scalloped corners.  Variation 7 would be the closest to what you have, but it does not have No. 20 cast into the pan like yours does.

The value was pretty high back when gem pans were hot - maybe $500.  It is probably only about half that now.  Those prices assume that your pan has been cleaned and does not have any damage, like cracks, pitting, or casting defects.  With all of those swirls, they are a bugger to clean up, but they look really nice when they have a fresh seasoning on them.

Thanks! It's in nice shape but I was hesitant to clean it too well for fear of ruining the patina or something. I picked it up for an embarrassingly low amount intending to hang it on the wall and didn't realize it was a griswold until later.

What a good find. Congratulations Jessica. As an idea, when I picked one up(variation 8) about four years ago, I gave $ 350 for it. I got it for a collector who had all but that variation. Tough one to find. :)

Awesome! We just moved across the country so $350 would be very helpful!

Check Ebay completed auctions for current prices, but I would say is is under $300, as I had several variations of that pan that I sold in the past year on Ebay and none went over $300.
