Any Griswold Pup Collectors?
« on: January 05, 2003, 01:14:18 PM »

As I understand from Dave Smith, Griswold never made any cast iron pups that didnt say Griswold Pup, 30 , on them and also did not paint them colors with the exception of some were japanned black.  Hubley supposedly made many of them, and painted  from the factory? I have never heard that Lodge painted any they made. I keep seeing pups on ebay listed as guaranteed ORIGINAL PAINT and you can obviously tell someone dabbed on them at some point in time. Its a shame some sellers knowingly or unknowingly deceive by calling them Griswold or Original Paint.

I have several pups in my collection that have advertising names on them. One you see most often is probably Hines....Does anyone know what Hines refers too?.....I have one that says Blue Pup on the back, and was given away by John Blue Co., Laurenburg, NC...I have no idea who made it, but its much smaller than the other pups?...also have one that is over 2" tall with advertising on it?....does anyone know of other foundries that made pups besides Hubley, Griswold, Lodge or can shed any light on the advertising names we see on them?

Jerry, I think there is an article in one of the back issues of Kettles and Cookware...Dave Smiths newsletter, on the pups...I will check it out here in the next day or so and let you know...I recall from somewhere that actually Hubley  made all of them for the various outfits including Griswold...I'll get back to you if I can find it...Paul

Jerry & Paul  There was a piece in Dave Smith's Kettles "n Cookware.  Volume 5 No. 5 page 42.  I've seen lots of pups but very few marked Griswold.  I think that would be a good topic for an in depth article....Dave

I think those pups have been reproduced quite abit and are mentioned in some of the fake sections on some of the forums etc...they may be running a close second to the 0 size pans...Paul

Over the years I have heard the various " Griswold did make pups... " and the "Griswold did not make pups" and " Hubley made all of the pups", and I don't know how many others. Well, let me say that I don't know but I have seen pups marked with Griswold and the number 30 AND an advertisement, either Hines or Bucky, I'm just not sure which. The pups were not repros so it was my opinion that Griswold made at least some of the pups since their name and an advertising name is on some of the pups. Make sense?

Harry, the story I heard or read was that Hubley actually made the griswold pups that were passed out by griswold...Paul

I dont remember seeing that article and I dont have that issue?

I've asked Dave Smith about this and here is what he told me:

"Griswold painted some pups black but as far as I know, no other color was used. Pups were also made by the Hubley DToy Company, in various colors and markings. Most pups are Hubley. If they aren't marked Griswold, 30, Pup, don't consider them as Griswold".  -Dave

I just know I have several pups that vary greatly in size, so I figure they were made by different foundries?  I do not have a Griswold pup for comparison.

I have 35 pups, most of them with different advertising on the back, also a couple in aluminum and brass.  The Griswold pup has his tail turned up a bit where as the Hubleys and others sit flat.  Most of them are 1 5/8" high but there are some that are 2" high, these are sometimes called 'papa pups'.  Check Doris Mosier's website, she has a nice showing of the different pups and a background on them also.  Her website is:
         www.griswoldcookware.com
It would be nice if we could get everybody to post what their pups advertise as there are a few new ones popping up from time to time.

John,
I have one of the larger pups. He stands 2 1/8" tall and has Mathews Steel on his butt.  The variations in lettering also fascinate me.  I have Hines Pup in raised letters and also incised letters....and the same thing in Aluminum.  All 4 say Hines Pup but are different in one way or another.

As I mentioned earlier, I see a difference in size among the pups and wonder if thats an indication they were made by a different foundry?

My favorites are the ones that look like the Hubley Fido bank. They have eyes and mouth like the bank and I assume they were surely made by Hubley.

If someone wants to start a list of PUPS and the advertising logos on them, I'll make a list for them on the site too.  I've been seeing a lot of different ones lately and a list would be helpful for those that collect the pups and know what is out there to find for their collection.  Any takers????

John Knapp, did you get my email??

I would be more than happy to list the different pups I have and also list the ones that I know exist.

Any chance we can also get some detailed photos of the pups posted that show the differences among them?  And include who was the maker and maybe some information on how the maker was determined.  This subject has drawn some good interest.

Sure would be good to have photos for each pup.  Wonder if Doris Mosier will contribute, as I know she has a large collection, but she has yet to register on this site.

I can take pics of my pups as a few of them do have variations, especially the "Hines" pups.  I dont know how Greg will want to handle the pic section, but I am open to suggestions.  One way would be is to keep our own pics in our computers and email them to members that want to see them.  Anybody have other suggestions???   Also, my pics wont be availablr until May, as I am in Florida for the winter :)

If folks send me TIFF, GIF, JPEG or other "normal" files, I can store them on this site and link the pix to the actual dog/pup, similar to the Foundries list that Steve is doing.

Does that sound like a plan that will work for all of you that have pups??

I will try to update this site, so that you will be able to send attachements in the IM section.  Just too much on my plate at the present time.
