3 Holed Shallow Skillet

I have a 3 holed shallow Slant Erie skillet w/ heat ring with the pattern number 228.  It is a #8.  It matches perfectly with the 'regular' Slant Erie #729.  I have been trying to find out if this is another series or just  a fluke out of the factory.  Anybody have any info???

John,
Are both of your shallow skillets iron or are either made of aluminum?  228 is the catalog number of the aluminum No.8 shallow skillet as shown in Griswold Catalog No.45 (c.1915).  I am thinking that someone at Griswold grabbed the pattern for the aluminum version one day and made some iron pans with it.  I don't know if there would be ANY differences between a pattern for an iron piece and a pattern for an aluminum one.
Pattern number, by the way, for the No.6 milled bottom skillet is also 729.   By the time that the milled bottom skillets were first made Griswold had long ago abandoned making the shallow skillets so reused that pattern number; something that they did on quite a few other occasions.

Hi Steve.  the 3 holed shallows are both iron.  I have all of the shallows except for the #10 Erie w/ NO pattern number.  I have been wondering if this was another series someone did way back then, or a fluke.  I was talking to Joe Noto who said he has an aluminum in the 228 number, but never knew anything in cast iron existed.  I know they 'recycled' the #'s on the milled series too.

flukes like that make this such a great area for collecting.

Imagine all the pieces that were probably made by some workers that were not "true Griswold" items made by the company but items made by the workers.  Sure would be nice to talk to some of the workers.

It sure would be nice to talk to them but i guess most of them are pushing up daisies now.....too bad we didnt start collecting this stuff in the 50's & 60's.
