Different handles
« on: June 29, 2003, 06:33:24 AM »
These pix are from Clark Rader.  He sent them to me and asked to have them posted and show the different handles on a #7 Griswold large block TM skillet.

That's a good example of what differences you will find on Griswold handles.  The top pan is the older of the two and shows a possible overlap with heat ring production skillets.  I don't know if Griswold did make both the smooth bottom and heat ring (older) skillets at the same time and no catalog confirms it either way, but it could be a possibility.

I like Griswold No.5 slant tm skillets and have found at least 5 or 6 variations on those pans (inclluding E and EPU).  And recently discovered that there are "fat handle" No.8 slant/E skillet handles with the fat handle being like you mostly see on Nos. 5-7 slant/EPU skillets.

If you are trying to put together a set of Griswold skillets with exact matching handles, forget it unless you are trying for a small TM set.  I think on all earlier skillets you can't find a full set with matching handles.  It's all those small details that are so much fun with Griswold.

:) :)Thanks Greg, and Steve, for all the information you give out that is so helpful for the enjoyment of cast iron, and of course to us WAGS members. :). This will help me look a little closer at every cast iron piece that I pick up, and of course I have to pick up every piece that I see. So a #5 skillet may not be (just) another #5, wow :o 8)

If you try and put together an exact matching set of Slant ERIE skillets you can hang it up! There are a bunch of variances in the sizes. From handles styles to the number cast in the handle to the actual lettering in the t/m to  ERIE  vice "ERIE".  I gave up trying to match an exact set.
