#948 Muffin Pans
« on: July 03, 2003, 10:30:06 AM »
I recently read this statement  from  another source concerning identifying 948 muffin pans?

"Does your piece have a letter under the #948? This would help in determining the variation that you have."

Does or will the letter under the 948 on some pans determine what variation it is?   I thought Jon Hausslers book shows several variations with the same letter under the number?

Jerry,
I saw that statement, too, and wondered about it.  I don't know everything about the 948 pans and haven't paid much attention to what pattern letters there may be among the different variations of the 948 pans.  If someone knows the variations well enough and knows that certain letters only go with one or two variations I guess that would be a way to know certain variations.  I am a bit skeptical about that method.  Why don't you ask Jeff how that would work in knowing which variation?

Here is a #10 like was being asked about.  Has no letter under the 948.  As far as I know, it is just another common #10.  I know I have seen several .

I have one 948 and it just like this link.  Very common piece, not a new variation as has been suggested by another.

I don't think the pattern letter, if there is one on a piece, has much to do with the variation.  Certain Griswold pieces may be distinctive with a certain pattern letter but not many collectors/researchers go to the trouble to pay much attention to the letters.  I don't believe the pattern letters in the photos or sketches in Haussler's muffin pan book are necessarily unique to any of the variations shown.  Pattern letters were often reused on later variations while some variations may have had new letters.

Jerry, I was curious about that too, so I emailed Mr. Haussler...... here are the emails and his answer.
Mr. Haussler,

I have been recently reading questions posted on the GCICA  message
board and a question was asked about a #10, 948 Griswold muffin pan.
He was asked what letter was under the 948  to determine which variation
the pan was. My question is can you tell the variation by the letter under the  #948?   This man has asked about a 948 with no letter under it.  Is that called
another variation?  I'm trying to learn and any help would be appreciated.....thank you, Shearylon

Shearylon,
It is my opinion that the letter under the 948 (Pattern Number) refers to a different mold. I did not consider the different letters to be different variations. There are many of them, particularly with the #10 pans for both the 948 and 949 pattern numbers as well as other pans. This starts to get to a level I detail that I did not want to pursue. It was the opinion of the many advanced collectors that I talked with that this was too fine of level of detail to consider. It is fine if someone wants to collect the pans with the different letters. However, I surely would not pay any extra to get a certain letter. I hope this helps a little bit. Thanks for asking.
