Wagner Ware/Griswold Dutch Oven
« on: August 18, 2003, 10:55:39 PM »
I picked up a Dutch Oven at an auction on Sunday that has both the Wagner and Griswold logos on it.  It's a 5qt and has an 8 on it also.  I asume that makes it a #8?  The lid also has an 8 on the inside and has three raised rings on its inner surface. A man at the auction told me that Griswold/Wagner only put both names on their cookware for 2 years.  Is this true?  I'd appreciate any info I could get on this item includining a ball park value.  It's in nice shape and appears to have spent the last several years in the back of a cabinet judging by the dust on it.  It was oiled before it was stored and that's what the dust stuck to.  I've always preferred cast iron for cooking whether it's a pot of chili or steak it always tastes better from cast.

What the auctioneer told you is true.  Wagner acquired Griswold, and all the molds.  So when you see a piece of cast iron marked with both Griswold and Wagner, it was cast in Sidney by the Wagner Co., sometime during or after 1957.

I'm not sure if it was only 2 years or not, but the piece was made after 1957 and at the Sidney, WW foundry.  Not really considered a collector's item, YET, but you know as soon as someone says it isn't, then everyone wants one.  The quality is not the same as the earlier years, but it is a great user piece.

Greg,
Your dutch oven was made about 1980 by the General Housewares Corp who owned both Griswold and Wagner from 1969 until about 4 years ago.   It might be true about the 2 year period of pieces being marked with both logos.  Value on your oven probably is around $5 to 25 as a guess.
