Wagner Ware 5 Star Skillet Set
« on: September 13, 2003, 03:36:32 PM »
I'm not familiar with cast iron cookware, but recently picked up a Wagner Ware 5 Star Skillet Set. It is a larger size skillet with a smaller skillet fitted as a lid.  The connect much like a "hobo pie" maker.  It is in pretty good shape except the word Wagner is corroded. The words Ware & Sidney O, as well as, the 5 Star Skillet Set are easily discernable. Also on the bottom of the larger skillet is the #1403 followed by a very small B.  The only markings on the top (lid) smaller skillet is the letter A on the handle & a number of circles on the bottom.   Last night I spent some time cleaning and seasoning set. They cleaned up nicely and I used them to cook a nice "healthy" breakfast of bacon & eggs this morning. They worked great, no sticking & cooked evenly. I plan on using the skillets at home & as a mess kit when camping. I friend uses cast iron for camping & reenactments and it cleans much easier in these environments than my aluminum mess kit. This was the primary reason that I had been looking for a nice cast iron skillet. I would very much appreciate any information on the age of the set and value.  I paid $30 for the set from a lady whose says they belonged to her grandmother in Ohio.  Thanks, Doug.

Welcome Doug,
the Wagner 5 Star Skillet Set, Cat. #1403. Is in the Blue book of Griswold & Wagner on page # 237. You can get this book by ording from this web site, A must book to have if you are interested in cast iron cookware. The book value of this skillet is $100. Any thing less than that is a good deal. $30 is a good price. Wagner was making this skillet in 1941. Have fun with your double skillet.

Clark, thanks so much for the reply.  I've posted to three different message boards and yours is the first response I've received.  Wow, I wasn't expecting the value to be that high.  I do plan on keeping & using the skillets, but I still like knowing a little about the history and value.  I do appreciate your response.  Doug

I got a little excited after reading your response, and posted before I had finished my thought.  I do think that I would enjoy collecting such pieces & will check into purchasing the book.  Thanks for  the infom

Doug,
those are very nice skillets that you have.  They probably don't bring the book price these days but, in excellent condition the set should be worth at least $50 to 75.  Wagner also made a similiar set with a deep skillet for the bottom and a regular skillet for the top.  It is not marked 5-star but has similiar handles and quality.  Together they make a nice pair.

I do appreciate the feedback.  I'm very pleased with my recent purchase.  I don't usually feel like I've come out ahead when purchasing antiques, so the book value on these skillets was a pleasant surprise.  I will continue to use them both at home & when camping, but I will be sure to take care of them.  You all have a very nice site here.  I do plan on picking up the Blue Book and may pick up a few more pieces in the future.  I do have a Griswold/Erie PA  Dutch oven (Tite Top Dutch Oven #8 Patent # 1333517    1278) that I found after my father passed away, but the lid doesn't seem to match (a little too large and rattles)  No markings on the lid except for 9A.  I don't have much use for it.  I find the skillets on the other hand quite useful.

Thanks for the positive comments about WAGS and this WAGS FORUM.  The lid marked 9A, could be a WAGNER WARE or a LODGE and probably is a marriage with that Griswold DO you have.  If you can send a pix, we can probably id it for ya.

I don't currently have any way of posting a picture.  I will post in the future if possible.  In the mean time I will continue to surf & enjoy doing a little research on this informative site.  It seems to have much more activity than some of the others I've looked at.

Thanks for the offer.  If I get an opportunity I will send an email.  I've been considering the purchase of a digital camera for a while & might have to break down and get one.  Recently I've had a number of occasions when a digital camera would have been pretty handy.  In the past I've just used my sister-in-laws.
