Favorite Griddle with ghost "ERIE"??
« on: October 11, 2004, 06:27:43 PM »
I just got through polishing this griddle with a wire brush when I noticed it has a faint "ERIE" on the bottom just below "FAVORITE".  Can someone tell me why it would have this and how this came to occur.  I have heard about ghost marks but I had never seen one until now, and I never understood why they existed.

Thanks.  I hope you all can see it with the pix.

Josh, These ghost images came about when a foundry, in this case Favorite, acquired a pattern from another company or made a pattern using another foundries piece as the "master". The  original foundries name was filled in on the pattern but it was never done just perfectly. The result was every time a mold was made and a piece cast from the filled in pattern, a faint image or "ghost" appeared on the finished piece as a result of the inability to perfectly fill in the original foundries name on the master pattern.  Hope this makes sense.

In addition, the material used to fill in the original markings may have been softer than the pattern itself.  After many repeated times of packing sand around the pattern the softer material would slowly wear away some leaving the faint ghost mark.  The fact that I have seen what appear to be identical pieces, some with and somee without the ghost, leads me to believe this.  We'd all like to know EXACTLY how the ghost marks came to be but will probably have to imagine possible scenarios.  The real fun ones to try to figure out are the one with TWO maker's ghost marks in addition to the real maker of the piece.  Some of these exist.

Do the ghost marks add anything or take anything away from the value of the pieces?

From what I have seen,  maybe a little.   But what it really adds is "conversation"[smiley=argue.gif]

I piece to really talk about.   Isn't that what it is really all about [smiley=unsure.gif]
