What are the Griswold patty molds supposed to be used for?  I have seen a few of them and was just wondering.

Lil,
You whip up the right batter, heat the irons in hot oil (in a Griswold patty bowl, for instance), dip the heated irons in the batter than deep fry them.  When pulled off the irons you have a shell that can be filled with creamed peas or other foods (deep patterns) or dusted with powdered sugar, etc. (shallow patterns).  They must have been popular (or popular as wedding gifts) judging by the number of them out there.  A friend and I once made up some and they are pretty good.  If you can get a good look at the box cover or inside the box they originally came in you will see a photo of sorts on how they are used.

Sorry it upsets you Lil but that's the real me.  At least during the moment the photo was taken.  Couldn't help myself.

Steve,

I must admit, you don't look like a C.I. collector...

But you do post by far more replies to people's questions than anyone else.  You can tell you know much about C.I. and are willing to share it. Even if a few of the younger guys razz you about doing things old school.

Could be because I started collecting as a coin collector sans specticles and suit.

Lil, try the patty molds and rosettes.  They are easy to make and are very light and crispy.  If you use the heart mold, fill it with your favorite filling.  I have put chicken salad, ham salad, etc. in them.  They look fancy and folks are impressed!  The little rosettes are like a very light, crispy cookie.

You wouldn't happen to have a recipe would you Marty?

The original recipe from Griswold, (Aunt Ellen). *2 eggs * 1/4 tsp. salt * 1 tsp. sugar * 1 C. milk * 1 C. flour---- Beat the eggs slightly, add sugar, salt and milk. Stir in flour gradually, and beat until smooth. Screw handle into mold. Dip iron into hot lard or oil, then into batter, not allowing batter to come over the top of the iron. Fry for at least 20 seconds but not more than 35 seconds. Remove from iron with a clean piece of cheesecloth, and allow to cool before serving.
Hold still rabbit, so I can cook you.
