Brown deposit
« on: March 05, 2005, 01:46:38 PM »
I have a dutch oven I have been using for 30 years. Over the past 2 years or so it has developeda brown deposit on the sides from the bottom up about 1 inch. It does not seem to affect cooking but is unattractive. I use it for many purposes but very often for pot roast. I have a square skillet used primarily to fry chops etc that has developed a similar deposit on the bottom and up the side about 1/4 inch. This is on the inside of both.

What is this and how can I get rid of it?

Hi Frank and welcome to the WAGS forum.  I am thinking you have a buildup of old cooking oils on your pans.  The other possibility could be rust but I think you would recognize that.

A little old cooking oils baked on won't hurt anything.  If you want to remove it you can spray with Easy Off oven cleaner (the lye based one).  Then you may have to do some re-seasoning of the pan.  I can't think of what else the deposits might be.  Are you using gas or electric stove.

Frank: Go to the section 'cleaning and restoring' then down to a thread 'right color-ovens'. This was a discussion about the effects of gas flames on various metals. That is if you have gas. Just a thought. C B
