Martin bacon fryer
« on: April 11, 2005, 04:18:33 PM »
I got a Martin small shallow skillet, which I think is called a bacon fryer.  It has the number 7 on the handle, but is much smaller than a size seven skillet.  Does anyone know why the size numbering is different than the standard sizes used on other skillets?

Here's a photo of it inside a wagner number 7.  I realize Martins aren't as widely collected, but for some reason this has made me wonder why the difference.  I have a number 8 Martin skillet and it's the same size as all the other number 8's.

The smaller size may have been the result of wanting lower cost pieces which seemed to be the reason for smaller pieces from the major foundries. I think the Martin handled griddles are also of a smaller size and the # 10 Ballard and Ballard griddle is about the size of a #8 Griswold piece if I remember correctly.

Just might be that the size is from the bottom of the sk., or half sk, shallow sk, griddle d/o and not the top or sides, that is the part that fits on the old stoves, ha ha but never always? Of course. Roger I like the half sk, shallow sk and griddles.Nice looking pan, does it have a heat ring?

Yes, it does.  It has the Martin logo inside it.  I'll have to check the bottom size against  a number seven bottom.  That makes sense Clark.  I hadn't thought  of that.
thanks

Roger,

These are usually refered to as skillet griddles.  They are great for making omelets in.

Thanks Marty, this sure is a handy size, and I will give the omlet a try this weekend.  Clark, I checked the size of the bottom against a Wagner #7 I have and it is still a size or two smaller.  Maybe one day the mystery will be revealed.  I'll just have to buy more of them until then.  Here's a photo of the back Clark.
