Hi Mary and welcome to WAGSland.   A lot of makers did not put their name on their skillets and other cookware but they did have, at times, other markings such as catalog numbers, pattern makers marks, molder's marks, etc.  I would guess that the 8 on the bottom of your pan is most likely the pans size (a No.8 which would measure about 10 to 10-1/2" diameter.  The B could be anything like a pattern mark, etc.  Your pan may have been made by one of any number of patterns the company had and it happened to be the "B" pattern.  Such numbers are insignificant.  A photo if you can post one might help identify your pan's maker but that's not very likely.  Hope this helps some.

Mary, up near the top of the page are some links including one for "cleaning/restoration".  Take a look there and you should find plenty of cleaning information.  I use the lye bath method but there are many other ways to clean including a combination of different ways to remove carbon/grease, and rust, etc.  There is also a board with lots of good cleaning information in it.  Your skillet photo is too dark to see anything that will tell me what you might have.  Skillets are dark to start with so you have to find a way to bring out the detail; maybe taking a photo in good outdoor lighting while watching what the shadows and lighting does.

The bottom of the handle looks familiar but not sure, still, of the maker.  Could be Birmingham Stove & Range and/or Atlanta Stove Works.  There is a tie in between the two companies.  In any case, your pan is more of a user than one that a collector would be interested in.
