Favorite - Piqua waffel iron
« on: January 10, 2009, 03:30:36 PM »
Perry I understand that you are the W/I guy so I need a little help. Most likely made a big mistake but for $6.00 I couldnt let this item go. I have a RUSTY W/I just the iron its self no base and no handles. Rusty but in good condition, it appears to have offset handles and is marked Favorite-Piqua Ware, #8. Is this thing worth cleaning and holding on to in case I might find a base later on? Did this W/I have wooden handles? I still need help id'g some of the iron guess the best way is to get burned a couple of times. The "junk man" has two W/I bases one round and ond square but I can't find a ID on either. Both are tall. Any help would be appreciated. Jim Weiss

Jim, not a real good pic but here is what your WI should look like.  Waffle irons without a base really go down in value, you can have a set of irons and look for years to find the right base.  Condition of the one in your picture looks like it might have some issues even after electro.  Mike

Well Jim, I was going to post you a picture of mine but Mike beat me to it. Mine has an unmarked base and is a high base one. I think these came in at least the two sizes, high and low. Maybe also a medium size but am not sure.

Mark, I've seen both high and low base, didn't know about a medium.  I've also seen a #9 low base.  Mike

That's pretty Mike!

I think...for six dollars, even if you got the short end of the stick, you didn't loose much, Jim...and if nothing else, it's worth the education! ;)

Jim, I agree with Charlee, for two reasons, first, if I don't she'd beat the L out of me, and second, she's right. For six dollars, I'd buy what you got there. I would not worry about the wooden handles, they are alright if they are on there, but it ain't no bid deal if they ain't on there. I took some of them short stubby handles, the originals, off and throwed them away just because I did not like the looks of them. And I'd clean them up too. You could very well find a base. So I think you done just fine.  :) ;)

According to this nifty Favorite Stove & Range Co. (Piqua, OH) catalog repro that I just got (  :-* ) They did made 3 different height bases. Low for coal ranges, medium for gas or coal and deep for gas ranges 'because of the necessity of turning over the pans while Waffles are cooking.'

I read that too Michelle. My take on it is that  the square bases were made in three heights? Strange I did not see this style W/I in the catalog, less I over looked it.

Ed, the catalog shows that the square irons came with all three heights and the round irons came with low and deep bases, I don't see the medium height bases shown for the round irons.

I don't see this style of iron shown either. But, what I do note is that the bases in this catalog came with bail handles... different than the base Mike shows for the iron Jim is inquiring about.

Thanks every one for all the good info. The pic looks worse than the item really is, its rusty but not pitted. I have cleaned a couple of skillets in as bad shape. If it ever warms up I will put it in the electro (when it thaws out) and give it a whirl. The junk shop has two bases but neither will fit this iron. Both are high bases and haven't found any marks as yet. Again thanks a lot for the info. thats what I joined for, good info and very good folks. Jim Weiss

I noticed that too. Both high and low base for this style iron have handles not bails.

Here is another Favorite with a side handle.  I have several Favorite WI's and this style and the one above are the only ones I've seen with side handles on the base.  Mike

Thats a hard one to find Mike. I have a line on one just can't afford it right now.  It's not shown in the Favorite catalog either.

So... are these older or newer that what we see in the catalog? Besides the difference in the hinges and bases, the waffle irons shown here do not have the Favorite logo in the center.

So... chicken? Or, the egg?

Michelle, I would guess the side handles are earlier.  I say this because the wi's Favorite made for Sears had the bail handles and I think they were making them for Sears when they went out of buisness.  These are just my thoughts and not proven facts.  Mike

I tend to agree, Mike... not that I base my opinion on anything concrete.  ;D In my mind, the irons listed here just SEEM older! How's that for sound reasoning? <snicker>

I have the 7,8,and 9 in the low base version, and would love to have them in the high base.
