Can you get rid of wobble?
« on: January 08, 2010, 04:19:20 PM »
I am guessing this is a dump question but thought I would ask.  Is it possible to "beat" the wobble out of a Dutch Oven?  I bought one on Ebay that has more wobble than I anticipated.

Sledge hammer, some blankets, and some "tapping"?

The short answer is no, it cannot be repaired. Cast iron is more brittle than glass. It will always crack or shatter before it moves.
This is by no means a dumb question. I think just about everyone here has asked themselves this, and there has been much discussion about it. It you type "fix warp" into the search tool, without the quotes, you will find some great reading in the older threads. One of my favorite things to do is read through good old threads. :)

Here's one to get you started.

Bill,  if the auction states,  sits flat or something to that extent,   send it back!!!   Everything that you bid on,  ask the seller about the item.

If you choose to beat it to death I'm sure the Iowa Tree Hugger would love to watch. He loves things that go BOOM or WHAM. Not as good as an exploding Paula Deen pan but beggars can't be choosers.

Ive tried a hammer... and it does not work. Ive also tried a grinder... and that works, until you heat it up for the first time. I took a belt sander  to the bottom of a warped griddle and had it sitting perfectly flat. But as soon as I used it it warped even worse than before. I think having a area that is thinner than the rest caused it.

That was when I first found some CI and before I came here. Now I know better and just pay really close attention and ask questions before buying.

Also I have 2 DO's, and they are both wobblers/spinners. But since I use them mostly in the oven it doesnt matter.

Heat it to cherry red and hit it with a hammer and it will break out the cherry red part..(Did It)  Heat and bend with visegrips and you will break a chunk out... (Did It)
I have a #10 Griswold skillet that is a spinner till it gets hot then its ok. I have see a few that cold there warped but when they get hot they flaten out.   :)
