Butchers furnace

Just wanted to share this one. I don't own it, but it is up for auction in PA. I've never seen one before.

This is the only pic, and I can't make out the wording on the front. It's only listed as a 15 gallon butchers furnace.

Well Jeff, I think its a feed cooker, like for hogs, for slop, and stuff like that. They are featured in some of the older catalogs, or I will put it this way, a variation of these.

Also, can anybody read that writing on that piece? I can't.

I tried zooming it in and that didn't help. The middle line looks like "Reading PA" Top line is something "& Co." Possibly "ORR, Painter & CO" ? Just not clear enough to tell.

On the Orr Painter & Co page of the foundry list, there is a catalog and price list from 1876. There is a picture of their "Farm Boiler" on page 76.
They came in several sizes. From 15 to 120 gallons. :o This picture doses not prove this item is OP & Co. only that it could be.
Is anybody planning to attend this auction?

I may be able to attend. It depends on what other sales are going on that day. The sale is about 15 minutes from my house. I will put it on my to do list for that day. If I can't attend, Deb says that she could go. Who knows. We may end up owning it. If nothing else, we could get some better pics for the foundry pages.

Chuck,
I for one would like to see some better pictures. I have only seen a couple of these boilers in person, and both of them were cheaply made of tin or steel. This cast one is very nicely made.
Cleaned up, I could see this as perfect for a corn boil. ;)
