Today's Find
« on: April 25, 2010, 08:58:31 PM »
I found a few skillets today during my junking excursion.  I passed on a Griswold #8 large block logo in good condition for $28 (too much money).  I did see something that made my heart stop.  It was a Griswold large block logo #14 (yes, a #14) skillet for $225.  It had somewhat of a warp and wobbled slightly when set on a flat surface.  I believe that it would've been possible to negotiate a bit on the proce but what's the point when the problem is pretty significant?  Did I make the right choice?

Here's what I ended up with:
Griswold #5 large slant logo skillet for $10
Griswold #6 small logo skillet for $12
Wagner Ware #6 1056E skillet for $9
Wagner Ware #8 1358A skillet with smoke ring $15

They're all a bit cruddy but no other issues.  Here are some pictures:

Well,  the #14's are selling for $200 on Ebay plus shipping.   Any wobble and the price drops.   Good to walk away from that one.

The #5 was a very good buy.   The others are good prices for the average skillets.   I bet the #8 Wagner is #1058A,  not 1358A

Thanks for assurance on the #14, Will.  I've never seen one before so I didn't know what to do.

I'm having a bit of trouble posting more than one image at a time.  All I can get posted right now is the WW #8.  Is this the 1358A as common as the 1058A?

I probably would have bought all those as well but I have a bit of a problem with iron that seems cheap!!

I don't have a Wagner 1358 either so now I am going to have to start looking for one of those as well.

I believe that once you clean up that #1358 you will see that is says National above the Wagner Ware.

Well Andy, I think you made some good buys. And like Will said on the #14 skillet, I would of passed on that also. As for the #1358 I really don't know what they go for in todays market but I like them. They are not as common as the #1058 but after that I don't know. A lot of my skillets look like that before cleaning and you take a chance with cracks or pitting buying them that way. I think though after cleaning them you will be surprised on how good they look.

Hi Mark,

You really know your CI!  I scraped away a bit of the gunk and did find NATIONAL.  Unfortunately, you were also right about the risks of buying gunked up CI.  I discovered a small crack near the handle.  I have to admit that I am really disappointed.  It takes the wind out of the sails.  Thanks for the great info, though!

Oh heck Andy don't let one little crack get you down!!!  That is just one of the risks that you take when you buy stuff with crud on it.  You get some good deals and a few lemons along the way.

I had a stack of cracked skillets that I just gave to new good homes.  They also make great users.

Well I'll be.   I don't have the National numbers memorized.   You got me there.   1058 is the "regular" #8 number.   Brain is fried for the last two days of computer work.   I hate computers.   Did a re install for a friend.  10 hours.    And my parents got a new one today.   UPDATES kill you.

Looks like a nice haul.

Mark, do you happen to have a #1359 in that pile?  I am looking for the "large" lettered NATIONAL with a flat bottom.

I have one of the #1359s but it is the small letter one. This is all that I have and they haven't been cleaned yet.

Hey Al, is this the style of "large letter" National you are talking about?  On this 1359 the letters in National are 7/16".
