Martin Stove and Range

Picked this one up this afternoon. It's the first one I've seen.

Hey Chuck. I like that stove too. Can't you see it sitting in a hunting camp somewhere, some food on the top of it. I'll bet many a lie has been told around that stove.  ;D

Thats a nice find.  ;)

Chuck, have you ever seen or heard tell of the Antique Stove Association? They have a website, and they have some beautifully restored stoves, they have some for sale, and pointers on restoration, the whole nine yards.

I'll have to check them out Perry. I still have a real nice parlor stove that I want to restore, but I want to do it right. It has quite a bit of Nickel plated pieces, and I would want to have them done at a place that has experience with these beauties.

I hear what your saying about the history of this piece. This thing has seen quite a bit of it, I'm sure.

I like that stove Chuck....I started to pick up a Martin Stove "Fatso" stove the other day at the cast iron junkyard. But on top of it, the two eyes and the divider was missing and someone placed a sad iron tray in its place, shucks it might have even been factory that way. It fit perfectly...so I wondered if that is why the sad iron trays are shaped that way. Any ideas?

Rick, yes, thats why they are shaped that way, so you take out the two eyes, and the I, if I had an I with a top and bottom, and then the sad iron heater fits right in the opening that is created, if its a number 8 sad iron heater, it will fit a number 8 hole. Also, the ham boilers that you sometimes see, a lot of them are gatemarked, same thing, they are made to fit them holes. And they are also used to boil water or whatever.

I was just about to ask the same thing Jeff. I've found many a missing piece just inside of the piece they were missing from. If that makes any sense. ;D Even if they aren't in there, the sad iron heater would look great in there place. Take a freind with you next time, and load that sucker on the truck. Just be careful of the legs. Those things can be fragile if you put weight on them in the wrong direction.

Good morning Chuck. You're right about them legs, they can be fragile. This guy I know, broke a stove leg, and the part that broke was the top part of it, there is a hole up there, where a screw goes through, and that attaches the leg to the base, and so he took the leg to a casting place, and told them to make him one, "just like this". And so they did, complete with the top busted out and all.  ::)

I guess the trick is to take them one of the good legs ;D

I've seen people break the legs off at the auction while they were tilting the stoves to get a look at how the legs attach. I guess they didn't have to worry about it after that.

Jeff. I picked the sad iron tray up to look inside and there was a big wasp nest with bees inside...I got out of dodge..and the next week I had some bee spray in my "old man's buggy". But the stove was gone. Chuck, thanks for that info...if I had been sure that sad iron tray was supposed to be there instead of someone just plugging up a hole, I would have fought those bees for it. But my bad...maybe I can turn another one of those up. thanks all

Chuck, that is a nice looking unit. What dimensions is it? Is it a single burn path? Is there any chance that you could post images of the 'guts'? I am hardly likely to find one here but a curious mind wants answers ;D

We are considering purchasing a wood stove/cooker in our home but that is all dependant on compliance BS and the costs involved. Ideally we would want a wet back facility.
The trouble is that our home is not designed well; the HWC is a way from the lounge/kitchen.

Well, it's been a couple of weeks, but here it is.

James, there are no guts to this one. Just a cast iron box to burn in. SImplicity at it's best.

I think I'll do the next one in flat blact. I'm not sure I like the shine on this one. The paint said semi-gloss. I guess it will dull once heated. Don't know if I'll ever do that or not, but I did use high temp paint just in case.

Chuck,

That is a beautiful restoration.  And I like the simplicity of it and it's use.  By the way, we did not expect anything but a beautiful restoration from you.  You didn't let us down.
Have a great day!

chuck,

Chuck,

That is the exact stove and model I have used for nearly ten years to heat my Arkansas Ozark old homestead farm house with. Its a dandy.
Not as efficient as say a modern Earth Stove but I have a pretty much unlimited supply of firewood.
I use up about 8 cords a year of different types of oak.
I gave $80 for mine in good to go condition. Took er home and measured for proper pipe length, ran it into an existing flue and been using it every since.
We had a major 5 inches of ice, ice storm two years ago, electric out for 18 days. My generator kept our food and water up to speed, and that stove kept us from freezing.
I recently moved out of that house, It was so full collected stuff that I had to move into this guest house/cabin.
I now have a large rock fireplace and am having an insert installed so I can keep heating with oak.

Be safe
