Oddball Gate Marked Pot
« on: October 31, 2013, 02:10:55 PM »
Hello everyone! Because the board was on its recent hiatus, I began to get itchy for my CI fix. I hit the fleas and co-ops with fierce determination, even going a few places that I thought would be off-limits for good deals. I managed to scare up some really good deals, and now that the forum is back, I will finally post them up. I'm going to put them in individual threads, so that any that earn the distinction of being moved to the members' side won't disturb any discussion about the others. Plus, it makes the threads more specific, which is good for searching.  :D

First up is an unusual bean pot that I bought at a local flea market. It was part of a package deal with a #7 Marietta skillet for $35. I've never seen anything quite like it. It is gate marked but has no feet or heat ring. The rolled tin handle was not only cast into the side of the pot, but it has an additional cast "bung" at the far end. It is not ground though it does have some marks from a vigorous scouring with a stainless scrubbie inside. It is marked "No 3- 4PTS" at 6 o'clock (but readable when the handle is up) and has either a "T." or ".L" inside a diamond at 12 o'clock. I believe it is actually a "T." though, with the right side of the crossbar slightly obscured. It is in beautiful condition, having been mostly cleaned and lightly seasoned by the seller (he is a picker and retired dealer specializing in flipping CI).

I've seen pictures of similar pots, but have never seen one quite like this one, especially with that cast on bung at the end of the handle.

Does anyone have any idea who made it, or when? Even a proper description would be helpful.

If I remember correctly, I think this is English.

Thanks Tom! I've seen a couple English saucepans that were similar, but haven't found another with straight sides like this one.

Has anyone seen this foundry mark before?
