Is it OK to stack your pans to store them?
« on: December 02, 2013, 01:46:10 AM »
I have several #8 pans, and right now, I just stack them inside each other so they take up less space. Is this OK, or do I need another way?

I've never had a problem stacking them.
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

It would be nice to have another way but with my limited space I have to stack all the cast iron pans. I am up to 5 in the stack. It sure is a heavy pain when I want the bottom pan.
May God bless us all,
Mike

Hello Shane ,
This is some of my over flow of skillets. Like said : it is bad when you need the one on the bottom :D.
I've had no problem stacking.

I put a paper towel in between them to keep them from scratching each other... but mine are always stacked, just like my Grandma's were.

When I have to stack pans I always put a styrofoam picnic plate or two in the bottom of each skillet to keep the weight up off the handles and relieve as much stress as I can from the sides of the pans on the bottom. The plates really help particularly if you have a stack of the same size pans. I've stacked pans a dozen high this way and have never had a problem.

Michael, that's some great overflow. I wish my whole collection was that much. :)

  • I don't collect waffle irons; they just show up.

I use styrafoam packing sheets in-between pans when I stack them, and I condition with solid Crisco.  I've seen a crescent-shaped shiny spot develop across from the handle on the underside of the pan if I stack them iron-on-iron without spacers.  I try to go through the stacks semi-regularly to look for rust spots, etc.

U-haul stores sell rolls of perforated styrafoam packing sheets that are a good size for pans up to size 8.    For larger pans, I just use a sheet-and-a-half or two sheets to cover the distance.
