Weird Skillet help with id?
« on: January 13, 2014, 01:22:58 PM »
Anyone know anything about this. Looks like it probably had some kind of cover. Thanks

Looks very similar to a piece I saw in a local antique shop.
Shape is identical, but the skillet handle had lettering "11 inch" on it.
It also had three legs on it, but they were intact and not ground down.
It also had the matching lid.
It was a W.C. Davis & Co skillet.
The lid had the name and a patent date of 1863 on it.
They changed their name "Great Western Stove Works" just before the end of the Civil War.
Went on the become "Favorite Stoveworks" which later moved to Piqua, OH.

Have seen many of them over the years.  I don't think the skillet would have originally had a lid.  It's possible, but I think people just found lids that fit over the years and made a set.  Most are not marked and no telling who made them.  Those legs were smaller on these as they were to keep the piece from rocking on the gate mark.  They were not the long legs for coals or hearth cooking, but rather short ones for use on a wood stove.
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

I have one like it.  Have tried to sell it for $30 but still have it.  It is very light.

I am cleaning it for a friend, just told her I would look into what it might be.
Thanks for the help.
